Of all the things to cancell...
The Queen has cancelled this year's Christmas party for her staff because of the "difficult financial circumstances" facing the country.
The 600 members of the Royal Household had been expecting to attend a festive celebration, with a guest, which the Queen usually pays for every two years, at Buckingham Palace.
A Palace spokesman said today: "The Queen is acutely aware of the difficult economic circumstances facing the country. It was decided it was appropriate for the Royal Household to show restraint and therefore not hold the party this year."
Staff had been expecting the party to be held in December.
Who wants to place a bet that the Royal Family would do a better job and create a more equal society than the current or previous lot in Government.Originally posted by ARCHIE_CALVERT:

Actually they bring in much more income from Tourism than they squander. If she's gone ahead with it the Press would have probably ripped her a new one.Originally posted by danjama:
God what a *****! As a taxpayer, id much rather she spent my money on aa party for her staff
than a million other things they waste it on!
And I can't help wondering how much is a waste on these glorified spongers.
Bloody cheek!

Well, that's a matter of opinion isn't it, there's no way to prove how many tourists come here JUST to see Buckingham Palace or watch the guard change. But I doubt it, personally. People would come here with or without the Royal Family.
Saying that, I'm pretty sure we could find some sort of figure for how much of taxpayers money goes to the Royals every year.
I'm not sure why you'd think that.Originally posted by Aimail101:

I have never in my life spoken to a single person that went to Britain to see the royal family. To be perfectly honest... nobody that isn't British even cares about them.
People go to Britain for the museums or for the historic sites. Or to see the scenic places, all of which happen to be outside of England.
I'd wager that as many tourists visit Britain to see the royal family as visit Britain to sample the cuisine... and I'm not sure anybody has ever actually done that. That would be like going to Germany to see a comedian or going to Russia to buy a car.

People come to Britain and visit their property which they pay to see which in turn generates far more income than they take out of the system through tax. Having said that I'm not sure they should take any tax at all but the 7 million they do take is the least of my worries compared to the excesses of Whitehall.
The Queen also seems to be a better respected Head of State and Diplomat within at least the Commonwealth than any President could ever be.
Think about this, some of the nicest people I have met have been born with everything (old money). When you have everything you try to look for other meaning in life. The people from families that have recently become affluent and don't know what to do with their money other than spend it on all the toys they want are the worse. This is much of the Middle Class and a sizeable portion of our politicians. The Middle Classes are horrible horrible people.
People certainly visit the palaces and such, but I think you'd be very hard pressed to find a person that got on a plane and flew to Britain just to see the queen. The royals are a bit of an oddity for everyone else. I think the feeling is, "well, we're here anyway, so we might as well go take a look."Originally posted by Aimail101:

Then you must have money yourself.Think about this, some of the nicest people I have met have been born with everything (old money).
Old money has nothing but contempt for us plebs. Some of the most vile, vicious people I've ever met have been those born into money.
Perhaps they'd fare better if not stuck beneath the boot heel of the 1% of the human population that controls 90% of the money...The Middle Classes are horrible horrible people.
I have been to the UK several times and while I have never gone there to just see the Palace or other royal sites they are certtainly places I have visited. I would say I spent more time (and money) in England than I would have if the royalty was not there.
And I must disagree with the Queen's decision to cancel the party. This is the same short-sighted thinking that President Obama used when he criticised corporate executives for flying around in corporate jets or for compaies holding retreats in Las Vegas. When companies cut back on spending like that they hurt the people who work at companies that provide those services. In the end it is the people at the bottom of thosse service companies that are hurt the most when corporations decided not to spend money on "frivolous" expenses.
