I thought it might be interesting to see how we all do things when presented with a convoy opportunity. Let's assume you have found and intercepted a convoy. What are your personal objectives?

I always try to hit the biggest ships first (tankers, troop transports, or on the vary rare occasion a liner. Then C3's and C2's if I can still get to them in a safe way. Else I wait, go deep, evade the escorts and go in again later, for the biggest ships. I usually don't attack the small merchants & escorts in a convoy, unless in an emergency situation, then I will try to destroy destroyers.

I'm not as experienced as some of you are, but I've been able to get inside convoys a couple of times by getting ahead of them and positioning myself so that they come directly over me. Once inside, I position myself perpendicular between the lanes (enabling easy aft & fore shots) & then I target the biggest ships in the lanes in front of and behind me. Once I sink something, I creep over as close to the wreckage as possible to hide and avoid detection. It works. The escorts can't distinguish me from the wreckage. I then have to sit tight (what seems like forever sometimes) and wait for the convoy to leave so I can finish off anything left behind.

I go for the big ships first like passenger liners,tankers and troop ships and of course the capital ships if they are in the neighbourhood.

If the convoy only has two or three escorts I will try to sink them so I can go at the convoy with my deck gun. Otherwise I ry to cripply the big targets so I can finish them off at my leasure.

Early way pre 42.. posistion into direct heading of convoy 500-1k to center line. Always sink lead escort. (either VW or Clemson) and wait for them to roll over me,, sinking from largest to smallest. Tankers, transports, c3.. ect. If weather is good I will sink until the flower vette rolls close and sink it to enable deck gun once im completely outta torps.

Post Late41 onward, highly depends on weather and amount of escorts. I will most likely run a 1k out from outside line positioned to 2.5k to center line. Places me in between side escorts and convoy itself. Wait for lead escort to pass..target sink heavys by laying spread pattern farthest to closest as to not give my position. Deack gun not so important when the merchants can fight back, and I would hate to be in the center of a convoy of Liberty or Victory ships.. lol

Doing this method I usually end up using aft torps on outside escort and sometimes having to take out lead escort if it comes to my posistion. Once those two are gone.. its easy sailing outta there.. no matter how many escorts are trying to get to me from the other side.. lol I never wait long enough for them to gang up on me. Nor place myself into a position where its easy for them to do so. To many deaths that way for me.

I make every effort to avoid the escorts at all costs! I save my torpedos for the merchantmen. I'll also try to enter the convoy, and sail up and down the lanes picking the most valued ships. Obviously this works best at night. You could do it submerged, but there's always the possibility the escorts will hear you!

I always try to sneak in at a 45 degrees angle (to avoid the forward and side DD), then sit there until the convoy is on top of me. Then I start torpedoeing everything in sight, starting with tankers, then the other ships. At night I will be on the surface, in the day time I will be at periscope depth, engines off. As soon as I am detected I will run or dive deep...
