Recently I've taken to staying on the surface at night whilst in the presence of Destroyers.

A brave and perhaps foolhardy choice maybe, but the majority of times I've not dived they've left me alone, which begs the question how far can Destroyers 'see' in the dark? I know the weather will play a part here, and radar too as the years progress, but is there a hard and fast rule I wonder?

i dont know bout that, but i was in BF region and hit a huge merchant convoy and they definitely detected me at about 1900m(VW, Hunters, Flowers), i was P depth and on all stop but they still seemed to detect and then circle. Uggggggggg It was dark and stormy and i thought i had it sussed ! came off with some hull damage and flak gone

For me its on and off..

Sometimes I can idle at less than 2000 and not be detected at all.. other times I can be over 4k and they seem to have magic sub finders even when I am at p depth with scope skimming waterline. Pre 41.

Once a flower detected me at 3.5k and circled me for over 30 mins. I finally got behind it at 1k surfaced and flak'd it with high explosive getting lucky Even luckier was its med convoy that it was protecting, being its only escort I made a quick 60k on that alone...lol was awsome.

If it has something to do with crew experience I will be screwed soon. :S

I guess it will depend on when and how good the radar is modelled. If it's early on you could get away with it, but later on you might not have a chance.

When you stand on the beach on a clear day and look to the horizon, that is roughly 30nm. I don't remember what that equates to in kms. I'm sure visibility in this game is completely random
