I started wondering if you could sue someone for remarks on the Internet so I ran a simple Google using "Can you sue someone for remarks on the Internet?"

Seems you can sue! Guess we should be very careful what we say about someone.

Sorry, sorry BG if you feel insulted by my comments.
When I've said something real bad here it wasn't me. Maybe my little nephew knows my password or my PC got hacked but it wasn't me.

LOL. I know where you both live so be velly, velly careful.

Seriously though. I wonder how anybody knows who you are if you are hiding behind a nic.

I would like to see a court case involving something like this. I am very curious to see how it turns out.
It would also seem that there really is no anonymity seeing as you can't truly hide behind a username. All that stuff can get traced back to somewhere.

The internet is a worldwide network, a global community so Freedom of Speech varies from one country to another.
So which law prevails? And many providers are not willing to hand over personal info behind a IP adress. In that case it will be difficult to get someone to court.

Reminds me of this: I happened to see a racist website with their usual prejudice about coloured and Jewish people. So I linked this website to a sort of anti-discrimination centre specialized in internet affairs with the question if this is allowed, but they let me know that they couldn't do anything about it 'cause it was hosted from the US and their Freedom of Speech differs from ours.

I am interested to see the outcome of a case like sueing somebody for making certain remarks.

Back in the late '90's, I purchased a PC game that was supposed to have a patch come out at some point to fix some of the problems the game was having. A couple of months later, I went to the game website forum to politely ask what the status of the patch was. One of the people who was a representative for the game replied with this scathing reply where the writer was calling me (and others) derogatory names, about how some of the knuckle dragging idiots didn't understand about what is involved with programming, etc. In summary, he, through the "courtesy" of the internet, tore me a new one!

A little while later, I was putting the game CD away when I saw the developer's address on the back of the case. The city where the developers were located was right next to the city where I lived. I stopped off at the address on my way home from work the next day, and it was located in a small office complex. I found the office, and walked in to see that there were maybe 5-6 guys sitting around their computers. (Heh. when I first walked in, there was a big eraserboard that someone had written "Vampires rule the night!" on it. )

Anyway, everybody turned to look at me as soon as I walked in, and I asked for ----, saying the guy's username. All heads then swiveled toward one guy sitting at his station, and this poor guy looked like a deer in the headlights. I then introduced myself using my username, and then asked what the hell did I do or say to get such a reply from him. He told me that he and the others had been swamped by people rudely demanding about what was going on about the patch, and that he finally lost his temper when he read my inquiry. He did apologize, and finally answered my question about the release date for the game patch. Everything turned out great, but I don't think he ever imagined that he would ever meet someone in person that he abused over the anonymous internet.

This would really open the floodgates of insanity. Imagine the implications of being liable for every remark you made on the internet. You can be sure that anything you say is potentially offensive to somebody, somewhere.

Why can't people just toughen up and develop a bit of character? Then there would be no offensiveness, just commonly acknowledged ignorance.
