    I was recently reading up on dieppe, and I was surprised to see that there was a substantial air battle over the skies of Dieppe

    Yep...I think the very first Mustang air to air kill was a RAF Mustang Mark I that shot down a FW190. Large scale operation of the Bostons, Typhoons, and I think even the first of the Spitfire F.IX models were on the scene.
