I've been doing combat flight sims for over 20 years back to Microprose Stealth Fighter onwards. I've never been great at picking up planes in the sky. When padlock views first came out, they were ok but I was always disoriented when I used it and wasn't tremendously effective.

I just received TrackIR yesterday and it is the POOP! Just as most people say. I can't believe how good it works and useful it is in game. Night and day difference. A MUST HAVE for combat flight sims. Anyone on the fence about getting TrackIR - no brainer - GET IT! My gosh, even in quick mission, when you make an initial pass, and start to bank, you look up through the canopy of your corsair and see the enemy immediately, making it a much easier exersize to engage and get set up for a shot. And when the bandit is just slightly outside of the front view, a slight head turn in his direction and boom, he's right there the whole time, very easy to stay with him and eventually get the kill. Great to see all the maneuvers he's doing and the ease that TIR allows me staying with him. Awesome!! Many times at this point, when the bandit is just outside of view, I'd lose him and have to start all over. The single engagements in QM are now very short! heehee Gotta turn up the difficulty now!

Just a quick note about TIR, and a thanks to all who've posted on this board that helped convince me of the need for it. (Nugget's Guide and others)

Ahhhh I love a convert. We have a guy in our Squadron 99th_Patches, who used to laugh as us TrackIr users when we'd curse and say "I forgot to turn on my Track IR!!!" He'd laugh and call us all sorts of this and that, now that he has it he apologizes constantly for doubting us all these years.

Great kit, glad you're enjoying it.

To really get the full TrackIR experience, be sure to install the 6DOF TrackIR mod from allaircraftarcade. Though you must 'mod pollute' your IL2 install to use it, this mod is top rate and is not a kludge; IMO it's definately worth it. This mod gives you twist and Z axis tracking motion. The twist axis is perfect for tracking a bandit when it flies behind a strut; its gain needs to be very low to be useful. The Z axis lets you move in to examine the instrument panel much easier. Welcome to the club, S!

IMO TIR should be listed as recommended hardware for all flight sims.

Nice to hear that Viffer. I'm also a new TIR user - I got it today A very nice item. Although I never had a big problem with hatswitch viewing this is an improvement for sure. Fortunately my head seems to be ok with it, I felt just a little dizzy but nothing serious.

I haven't installed any mods but now I must really consider getting the 6DOF.

The TrackIR is a world of difference.
When I first got it, it felt very "goosey", but after a couple days practice with it, I was acclimated.
At this point I can no longer imagine flying without it.
As good as TrackIR is, the 6DOF mod is that much better.

tir is the reason I fly sims today... it was only after I got the TIR version 1 back in 2003 that I started to fly regularly

    Welcome to the dark side!

I got a Track IR back when it was version 1.0 and have been harping on about how great it is ever since.

For me, it's just behind a stick and pedals in the priority list, ahead of a HOTAS and any other paraphernalia. Can't fly without one now (as I recently discovered due to an enforced absence, no Track-IR is like flying inside a letterbox).

Got Track IR 4 last Christ Mass past, it's brilliant. Takes a little bit of getting used to, still thumbing the hat switch (old dogs, etc.) but it's instantly obvious that simming pre-Track IR was like making love in a wet suit.

It does make a world of dfferance doesnt it? I dont like the 6dof mod tough, dont know why, the view always started to twitch when i looked behind me. The only downside is, that you cant get on without it when you get used to it. If i play at my friends or anywhere without TIR, i always start twisting my head like a moron
