I've had the exact same issue with Memorex CD-RW discs. A quick web search finds that I am not the only one with this problem and the consensus is that Memorex is to be avoided. TDK, Sony, and Verbatim fall at the top of the list in terms of quality, I found a vendor on Amazon.com who was offering a good deal on TDK 12x CD-RW's. These are not bulk packs, but each pack of 10 discs comes in its own jewel case. I have not had problems since switching to TDK.Originally posted by PF_Coastie:
Good stuff RJ, thanks!
But your other post got me checking some discs. The "old" disc that works fine was a different brand. However, I did find an old disc that is the same brand "memorex". I put it in and I could read it just fine.
Then I found one of these same discs not burned yet, so I tried it. It burned and I can read it fine! So, I dug down to the bottom of the "new spindle" and grabbed a disc. I burned a file on it and I can NOT read it! WTF!!!
These new discs are the same brand, same style and same size. Just the layout of the typing on the top is different. What is really strange is that I have burned several discs from this spindle a few months ago with no problems.
So, I guess I will give these to my wife and try the new discs I get with my new Burner on Monday.
The bottom line: disc quality varies, Memorex has the greatest market penetration and low prices, but their quality is on par with the store brand discs which are usually very poor.
I had this as well burned discs for many years..no prob. Then i had a few discs given which i used but found although it burned info it couldn't read it once written.Very frustrating as around the same time i had re-formatted pc so thought i had missed something.Anyway got hold of old brand and problem solved.I have since found this with a number of cd write discs only i put blank disc in and i'm told to insert a disc..doesn't even respond to the blank as if its not in drive.

Since finding that site I use Taiyo Yuden exclusively, from SuperMediaStore with great success. I needed inkjet printable media for wedding videos and could not afford any problems. I was in a rush one time and bought 75 name-brand printable DVD-Rs from S A M ' s , over half would not play in customer's set-top DVD players, never again ! (Using the free prg I discovered they were misbranded and actual mfg was on the trash list at the site above.)
BTW TY's new 'WaterShield' disks are new very white highgloss and very good and print beautifully.
