If you've got an 8MB ADSL connection, remember that this is the maximum possible speed for that package, but not necessarily for your connection... The way I understand it is that your actual speed depends on how far your house is from the telephone exchange, the quality of the line (noise levels), and the contention ratio (how many other connections are competing for bandwidth in your location).Originally posted by VikingGrandad:

I should be on 8Mb but for some reason I'm down to 5Mb at the moment![]()
At least this is the case in the UK using a BT phone line. It might be a different situation with a cable connection, or in other countries.
Everyone I know with an 8MB connection gets a speed of around 5-6MB/sec. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
I am very near to the exchange say less than 100 meters, when I first subscribed I was getting the full 8Mb.
Yes, (actually it's Malmö) and yes, but I have NEVER downloaded anything faster than 1mb/sOriginally posted by VikingGrandad:
'Malmo' - is that in Sweden?
Are fast connections like yours normal in your country?
Nope, 24mb/s down, 1mb/s up... And i wouldn't call it expensive, just about 30€ a monthOriginally posted by Celeon999:
Looks like a 15 MB package
My provider also offers one but its too expensive for me![]()

Its no different, cable works the same way. It all depends on your line and how many people are feeding off of it. I moved into a brand new apartment a few years back and was told i would get pretty good feed since the cable line had just been recently laid. The installer also pointed out that as more people start to move in and order "comcast" that the connection will weaken. Well he was right..within a year the apartment complex was completely full and a few track homes were buildt around us and my FAST Internet connection over this time became just average.![]()
Has your broadband provider explained why the speed has dropped? I guess it's probably due to more people in your area getting ADSL since you first subscribed.Originally posted by Goose_Green:

It's not very fair that when these broadband companies get more customers in an area, and therefore more money, they give us an inferior service for the same price!
If you only get 75% of the speed, you should only pay 75% of the price!
(of course the speed issues are covered off in their terms and conditions...)
