Came across an interesting utility called SpeedTest which tests your internet connection speed.
Here I use 4mb connection, so I'm not sure why I didn't hit 4mb - hopefully someone here can explain - but I thought my fellow Kaleuns might like to have a go for themselves. It's free, no download involved, harmless and will no doubt provoke some discussion!....

If you've got an 8MB ADSL connection, remember that this is the maximum possible speed for that package, but not necessarily for your connection... The way I understand it is that your actual speed depends on how far your house is from the telephone exchange, the quality of the line (noise levels), and the contention ratio (how many other connections are competing for bandwidth in your location).Originally posted by Goose_Green:
I should be on 8Mb but for some reason I'm down to 5Mb at the moment![]()
At least this is the case in the UK using a BT phone line. It might be a different situation with a cable connection, or in other countries.
Everyone I know with an 8MB connection gets a speed of around 5-6MB/sec.
