I'm tentatively planning a one or two week vacation in Germany as a birthday present for my wife. Flying into either Dusseldorf or Munich, depending on which one you guys recommend as being the best for spending a few days driving around the countryside, staying at small inns, sightseeing, etc.
I'd really appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Depends on what you want to see. München certainly is the better choice in terms of tourist chlichés about Germany. Driving around in the countryside is beautiful, and you do not want to miss out Castle Neuschwanstein, which is only a few hours drive away. Düsseldorf is a city bordering the famous "Ruhrgebiet", the industrial heart of Germany. So you have quite some extremes there. It really is a mtter of taste. In both areas you have lots of stuff to see. In Düsseldorf here and tehre you still find ruins of bombed out houses or your typical bulletholes in the walls dating back to when the americans closed the Ruhrgap.
But, for your wives sake, go to Munich. You will find yourself really satisfied to see all the american clichés about germans are true in this city

Munich is what you'll want. Dusseldorf and surrounding area is industrial.
Consider flying into Frankfurt. Spend a few days there, taking the Rhine River boat excursions (many castles along the river enroute to Koblenz; round trip excursions), visit Rudesheim and Weisbaden(both on the Rhine River), then drive from Frankfurt to Wurzburg and from there follow the Romantic Road route down across Bavaria through Rotenburg...Dinkelsbuhl...Augsburg..and on down to Fussen (to visit Neuschwanstein Castle). From there cut across thru Austria and back into Germany to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Take a side trip to Oberramergau. Then drive from Garmisch up to Munich and fly out of Germany from there. If you can work out such an open-jawed airline reservation it will be much to your advantage so that you never have to re-trace your steps back to your arrival airport. In my opinion, it is worth any additonal charge which might be levied)

Yes, I would definetley choose Munich over Dusseldorf. Munich is south and is much closer to Berchtesgaden where you can see the Eagle's Nest and the amazing alps there, and among a myriad of other beautiful things is Garmisch; where you can take ski-lifts in the summer for site seeing purposes. You won't want to come back. Too bad you are married; those frauleins oh wow.
