Until last week I thought IL-2 movie making was just about editing tracks using the sim! I had never heard of Fraps, Virtual Dub or DivX . Since then I've downloaded them all, and have tried to get started using the various guides and forums, but am stumped by a video compression error in Virtual Dub.
Ok....I've recorded my track using Fraps set to 30fps, run full screen at normal speed. In VDub I've selected No Audio. For video compression I'm using full processing mode, with DivX codec set to defaults, then Multipass - 1st pass, then 1250kbps. When I select "save as AVI" I get the following error:
"Source image format not acceptable (error code -2)"
Also can't get my VDub help file to work, so no help there.
Software (free) versions:
Fraps 2.8.1
VDub 1.6.17
DivX 6.4.0 Codec
Video Mode - Open GL Resolution 800x600x32 (uncropped)
Can someone tell me what I'm missing?

I don't know what -2 error is.
I suspect you don't have a raw clip that has the resolution in multiples of 4 (though you say 800x600?)
Pop the clip into VirtualDub again, then click FILE, the FILE INFORMATION, and tell us what it says.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yes, frame size is definitely 800x600.

Hmm, no idea, I need more information.
Can you make a small clip and send it to me? If I can compress it then we will know that the problem is with your setup, and not the file format?
I have never had any problems compressing Frapped clips into DivX.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

hi jackson,
i guess, you have selected one of the 'profiles' (like 'home-theater') in 'divx', which limits the accepted resolution. i remember, that the 'unconstrained' profile is only available in the 'pro'-version of 'divx'? not sure about that though, so you should check, if there is a non-profiled encoding possible.
then, you can uncheck in the 'divx'-encoder settings under 'advanced': 'do not prompt with errors and warnings'.
last, 'fraps' encodes in a special colourspace, often identified as 16bit-rgb (which it is not). 'divx' does not officially support 16bit-rgb - in rgb just 24/32bit. in that case it helps to encode lossless with 'huffyuv' first (which is also good for any general transformation like resizing, desaturating, cropping etc).
as a note: the 'profiles' are only relevant in case, that you want to conform with (never officially stated) 'standards' to playback 'mpeg4'-files on newer standalone dvd-players. however, if that is relevant, you can even compress with higher bandwidth to 'mpeg2' and make a video-dvd. furthermore many standalones can also play non-profiled mpeg4 (as i said, there is no 'standard' yet, the profiles have been made up just for commercial purpose)
anyway, as, in my opinion, 'xvid' is by far the more advanced and faster (and free) codec, and similar in usage, you might give it a try. there are also profiles included, but more clear to disable. in case, you have other 'mpeg4'-content on your hard-drive, it is also much less problematic in decoding ('divx6' tends to insist on its merits and interferes a lot with subtitle formats other than its own).
i must say, i dislike a lot the distribution policy of 'divx6' as a package. only 'nero' is worse, which installs by default an indexing system (besides the 2987 other indexes, which are already indexing all files on my drives every 10ms to grant me faster access) and a multimedia-suite (which is not bad, but just adds/changes more icons, which are changed back by 'quicktime', 'windows mediaplayer', 'divx'-player', 'windvd' with every use... well, 'windvd' is the worst, i just think
).
sorry for the intermezzo..
for the helpfile of 'virtualdub':
the package available on the avery lee's site (or soundforge) includes always a helpfile in 'chm'-format. on first use it will uncompress automatically. if you can't open it, you might need an activex-control ('activex for help'), available free at microsoft. it happens, that by accident this control will be disabled or deleted by firewalls.
for additional help with 'virtualdub' you can check the
documantation and knowledgebase
or
doom9's forum: virtualdub and virtualdubmod<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanks for your advice Deepo,
Have explored your links and unchecked the error prompt without progress. Am working through a fix with Joe-90 as he seems to know DivX. Might try Xvid yet.

ah!
I got your test clip, Jacksons, but when I tried to play it in WMP or Vdub, I got the error 'unrecognised frame format, please install the latest version of FRAPs'
So I installed FRAPS 2.8.1 and all was honkey dorey, then managed to compress with Divx no problem.
It appears that the new veersion of fraps will therefore have an updated codec. Therefore, try removing FRAPs, then installing 2.8.1.
IF that doesn't work, you may have a codec mismatch. You didn't, by any chance, install one of those all-in-one codec packs did you - always a bad idea? Best thing is to remove all software that may have installed a proprietry codec - scan your add/remove programmes for a start. You can also remove codecs manually, but try the other stuff first.
Failing that, deepo's suggestion is an excellent one - save all your frap clips with the Huffyuv codec first.
Then you edit them in your editor. Then you render with NO CODEC (huge file, beware). Then compress that huge file in vdub with divx or xvid.
Codec's...love em, hate em, you just can't live without them (a lot like women, though easier to understand)<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanks again for your efforts there,
I did download all the software separately, but I'm thinking maybe parts of DivX aren't working due privacy options. If it's that user unfriendly I'll just give it the boot and try the other programs. I'll do some more trial and error with your advice in mind, and let you know the outcome.
And as for women....hmmm....kinda like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates really. You never know what you're gonna get, but if you don't like it, try another box!
