Personally I'm waiting on the ATI version of SLI as it will render full vs 1/2 like the NV product and be backwards compatible to AGP using rialto.
I would imagine the dual cores if using standard 939 socket would be backwards compatible via bios if the chipset were compatible with dual core instructions.
No Win XP 64 is a 64 bit version of XP Pro and not a early beta of Longhorn. Totally different OS all together from bottom up

Also, does anyone know if the new(yet to be released) dual-core AMD cpu's will be 'backward' compatible with a AMD64FX55 (939pin) cpu/mobo?
Third...is the free Beta/Demo microsoft Windows64 OS the same as their "Longhorn" OS which is not to be finalized until late 2006?? If building a brand new Rig, would it be of any value to try out the Windows64 beta as the OS???

Thanks for the response...now, does anyone have an opinion(or experience) on whether the free Windows XP64(Beta/Demo) would be usable/valuable in a new Rig???
The two hsf's I'm looking at right now are the zalman cnps7700-cu and the thermalright xp120. Both of theose are for amd64's or p4's not socketA, but there are very similar models for socketA (only difference being 90mm fan size as opposed to the 120mm fan size), these are very popular air cooling solutions among overclockers.
I have the Zalman 7000 CU and can highly recommend. It is very quiet but also very good at cooling. Much better than the Volcano I had before.
But I think you are much better off getting a full size server tower case with lots of 120mm fans. I just got a Thermaltake Va8000 Armor case and my CPU temps dropped a full 8c. See earlier posts in this thread.

Well, I been using the WinXP x64 Release Candidate 2 version from/since last February as my main OS, and I can tell you it's very stable
Only problem with it and with the Release versions is the lack of drivers for some hardware, the most recent stuff from known vendors is covered, but the other stuff isn't yet. So I been keeping WinXP 32bit in another partition for when I need to use my scanner and sync my PDA.
Other than that, WinXP x64 runs rock solid, no problems with most 32bit applications and IL-2/FB/PF runs great on it, not faster nor slower, just at the same speed as in a 32bit OS.
Give it a try if you got a 64bit enabled CPU.
On the matter of the upcoming dual core processors, both AMD and Intel launched them a couple weeks ago, but they aren't available for purchasing yet.
If you're an Intel fanboi, be warned that the new Dual Core CPU won't work on existing Intel mobos, since it requires a new socket with an extra pin as well as a new chipset. So if you want to upgrade to one, gotta get a new mobo too.
In the AMD64 side, their Dual Core CPUs are pin compatible with the 939 socket mobos, so in most cases you'll only need a BIOS update/fix to make your existing mobo Dual Core compatible, then all you need to do is swap in the new Dual CPU and you'll be ready to go.
No extra/hidden costs, no extra effort![]()
Ain't AMD great?![]()
That's good news...so if I go with the following in the immediate future, I would be able to upgrade next year using same mobo and simply dropping in a new AMD (939pin) dual-core cpu and 512Mb Nvidia graphics cards.Originally posted by NetDaemon:

Thermaltake XaserIII V2000A case or the VA8000
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe PCIexpress mobo
AMD Athlon64 FX55
TWO ASUS GeForce 6800 Ultra PCI-E Graphics cards
One more Question: Anyone have a feel for whether the new 512Mb graphics cards will be "swappable" with the current 256MB ones...work with same mobo/slots/cooling/etc????
Actually, they are out, here's a link: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...oryCode=012229
They are back ordered though, hmmm, I wonder why....![]()
The 512mb cards will be completely compatible with your current rig. The interface is the same (AGP or PCI-E), the only difference is the extra RAM on the card.
From what I understand, the first batch of 512mb cards will use the current X800 or GF6800 chips. You won't see any performance difference for most games with the extra RAM. Doom3 and maybe one or two other games are the only ones programed to use 512mb. Personally, I'd wait to get the next gen cards (R520), with the 24 pipelines, before upgrading. Those should be released soon.
paper launch so far no channel items... I'm a BFG dealer so nothing in qty yet.
