So I sunk everything (including 3 DD's on the way in) including the carriers. Funny the planes stick to the deck like glue unless they blow. I got major tonnage but finally hit exit because the mission wouldn't complete. I dunno if anyone else has done the quick mission photo recon and knows how they completed it.
There are two parts to the mission. Here are the mission parameters:
[Objective 1]
ObjName=SM06_Objective01
Obj=5
ObjType=0
RenownAwarded=500
ZoneName=Obj1
PhotoValue=270 <--- (You need to photo all 3 CVs and most of everything else in the harbor. The CVs are worth 60 each and the merchants are anywhere from 20 to 40 each. In this case you need 270 points to complete.)
MinPhotoValueThreshold=0

After you complete the photo part, you will then need to sink 15000 tons to complete the mission.
[Objective 2]
ObjName=SM06_Objective02
Obj=2
ObjType=0
RenownAwarded=500
Tonnage=15000 <---
TonnageType=1

Some Observations:
1. Re dropping off spys, supplies etc. Surface and then STOP the boat. If you are within range if the target point on shore the message box will come up giving you options of "Launch Boat", "Postpone" etc.

2. Loading the 1.4 Patch from UBI.com made a world of difference on my machine for just improved playability.

3. Figuring out the Promotions was a easy...BUT I've got ONE Patrol Star to award and EVERY salior lights up to recieve it. Shouldn't a Patrol Award be presented to the boat as a Team effort? No individual has contributed more then any other. I'm not trying to rediculous but I'm sure we're missing something.

Though the mission gave no specifics of tonnage this time there was a large and a medium merchant, compared to the small merc and subchaser before, and ONE photo of the large merchant got the completion and disabled the camera.

Maybe avoiding detection is paramount.

Maybe a tonnage requirement.

Maybe avoiding detection kept the tonnage in port.

I didnt have to change any values.And didn't do much different than not geting detected.I took photos from the star(right off the bat) both attempts and the first click got the completion in the latter attempt.

Thanks again.
I think the game is requiring a certain number of different targets to be phographed, but did not spawn enough in the harbor to complete. You said you encountered a convoy going into the harbor, maybe the large ship plus the ones in port were enough? That is the problem I had, the game wanted 5 ships photgraphed, but there were only 3 in the harbor.

I think you're on to something here and I found something perhaps helpful.

I had a photo singapore harbor mission and at best, even after reloading several times, I could only get it to spawn one ship actually in the harbor. Taking a photo of the one ship was not enough, but then I noticed all these fixed gun emplacements dotting the shore. I think they were targetted as large and small bunkers.

I also noticed the camera button comes to life. =) Yup, two photos of two differnent bunkers and BAM! Mission complete!

Hope that helps anyone frustrated with photo missions as apparently any red targets in or around the port will count.

With regards to the earlier part of the thread, re: challenging / Impossible missions...

The most satisfying mission yet I've had was one last year, very very deep inside the waterways of the Japanese home islands, with perhaps 45 to 50 feet of water, for days and days. Sufaced, during night, submerged during the day, ultra slow, dodging DDs fishing boats, etc, to sneak into a harbor to photo 3 carriers, and then doing the same to sneak back out, looking for deeper holes to hide in while small fleets of surface action groups traveled overhead, with my boat rigged for silent running, dead stop, on the bottom.

A huge storm brewed up, and aided escape.

Felt like scenes from a World War II film.

Not worth much renown, but I don't play it for the renown.

In real life poeple in ww2 had to do 6 patrols in the same area.
maybe it is the same in Silent Hunter 4.
Hopes this answers it.

I know.
I had to photo Toyota (sorry for bad spelling[ it means the captail of Japan in case you can not understand it]) and there was loads of DDs, PTs and there was a feather at 2/3 knots (which can be seen a long way off!) and yet i finshed it alive (my first succseful mission!) and cralwed back out of the harbour then surfaced and there was a land unit, i went submerged then a dd came and i was gone out of sight (only very good rader could pick me up.
I felt that i had been taken out of time.

You must travel to within 8 nautical miles of the objective then, while submerged, lock an enemy vessel in your periscope and press the menu bar button to take a photo. You may need a number of photos to complete the mission. You usually get 300 renown points for this mission.

you are simply incredible I owe everything to you! My Ohhh nights of wolf of the sea...

Great thread, but disapointing. So many things seem to be needing fixed or explained. I get the impression that UbiSoft didn't sea-test this very much.

But, an informative thread. Thanks all.

Ubi pushed SH4 out the door waaaay before it was ready. It was total crap in stock form. Even after patches its not a great game.
Its the people involved in the super mods (GWX, RFB. TMO etc) that turn the SH series into excellent and fascinating games.

The patrols piss me off at times. I spent at least 3 days (at least 60 hours) within 100nm of the patrol zone on my first mission, and it still didn't report as mission complete. I always use a compass to mark the patrol zone, so I know I was within 100nm. I completed 3 search patterns within the area at 1/3 speed (8 knots.) I even lingered a little while. It seems like this doesn't happen on every patrol, so it drives me nuts. What is wrong with it?!
