I am trying to run Settlers 3 on my laptop with Vista, 32-bit. I have tried all of the various fixes I could find in this and other threads, such as disabling firewalls, UAC, changing compatibility modes, running as administrator, and many different orders for installing/patching (including pennyuk's thread). I still cannot get it to work.

When I double-click "s3.exe", it opens the outline of a window, with "S3" and the Settlers 3 logo at the top left. However, the middle of the window is empty, and my cursor turns into the blue circle. It stays like this until I shut "s3.exe" down using the task manager.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Oh hai honored forum!

This complete n00b like Scandinavian is in need of your help.
I just bought my very own settlers III (just the original one. No amazon edition or anything fancy), and of course I met the same problems as most other user in this thread with the problem of opening the game after installing disc1.

Now, I did follow the guidelines. Found several with the same guideline - dropping the s3old160.exe patch in the settlers dir and afterwards replacing the old s3.exe with the new one. Some guides came without one of these two simple steps, but i have tried them all.

So. My main problem is when I try to run the game I get this message:

DirectDraw Error DDERR_CANTLOCKSURFACE occured at CSurface:DLock

I try to get this working on xp pro. Can any of you masters of the wizz help me?
    Be'be' pænt om? (Pwetty pwease?)

Installed S3 in new computer (original version 1.20) and then added XP patch mentioned in forum. Started game (version now 1.60) but after few seconds it shuts down with message:

Structured Exception c0000005 occurred at 0x005FADC9. Read from 5add8ff1 failed. (occur & read vary slightly each shutdown).

Could use some help - love this game!!!

    Hi,

I´ve installed Settlers3. Patched it to v1.60 and using the vista/win7 s3.exe file.

Everything runs fine until i start up a campaign or a single player scenario. Game launches, gameworld comes up and then graphics freezes, but music and sound effects is still running. Every 10 seconds the game runs for half a second and freezes again. Keeps doing that.

I´m running administrator start up. In compatible mode i´ve tried all of them from win 95 to win 7. No luck.

I´ve just installed it the same way on my mates vista pc and it runs perfect.

I´m running Settlers 3 gold edition.

    Can anyone help?!
