Just got a working IP for this beat up laptop here in the desert....Tried SH4 when I was home on leave for a few minutes, did not really give it a chance but after reading these threads I feel it will be the second most enjoyable thing I will do. I would really appriciate someone letting me know what mods to put on it and when. I bearly got out of port the first time. Is there a mod to make the periscope screen better? Kind of looked like an arcade. Tuddley are you out there?

Welcome back Otto.
Your first order of business should be to buy the U-boat Missions add-on. It has all the patches included and takes your game version to 1.5. After that, there are two game play super MODs to choose from., RFB (Real Fleet Boat) and TMO (Trigger Maru Overhauled), There is also a "starter" version of TMO, TMO with Training Wheels that eases you into TMO. The link is in my signature. There are also some very good graphics MODs out there too.
My personal list is TMO with RSRDC (Run Silent, Run Deep Campaign) enabled on top of that.
Tuddley has been among the missing for a few weeks now. There have been rumors of alien abduction.

Otto, I would recommend playing the game stock for a bit. My reasoning is that you can't appreciate the changes the mods bring without knowledge of the basic game. Definitely purchase the U-Boat Missions Add-On. It helps even the fleet boat end of the game.
Then follow Dave's advice. My advice is to keep your mods list short to avoid mod conflicts. Over at SUBSIM there seems to be another of those fads where everybody installs a couple of dozen micro-mods. Then we get reports of conning towers vanishing, depth charges that hit the water and disappear, torpedoes that pass through targets without impacting (play the scary music) and other strange effects. Usually game reinstallation is the only cure when you get to that point.
Keep it simple I say. Dave's configuration is one that is guaranteed to be a lot of fun. Get acquainted with the game before loading up TMO though. It bites.

Well, plugged into the Iraqi internet and got blasted with a virus so I am borrowing a friends machine. Sounds good about the TMO. I will start out with the stock game for some sea trails. I was pretty comfortable with SH3 GWX 1.2. I plan on going for a quad core PC w/GT 9800 nivida card. My SH4 sat on the shelf for almost a year due to an old PC. Has anybody heard from Tuddley?
