The reason this true state of affairs has not been made public is twofold:
Or are you now giving out the "hush hush wink wink say no more..." Isn't that violating a security agreement somewhere if it is a secret not for public digestion?

In fact, you are just describing turbulent flow.

I think at this point I'd better get back to testing GE in the IL-2 sim, rather than chasing ever-diminishing vortices that may only exist when you aren't looking.

Maybe their real purpose is as a manifestation of His Noodliness the Flying Spaghetti Monster:

The mirror analogy doesn't say anything about vortex decay. It does say about movement of the trailing vortices and about reducing airflow over the wings which apparently is a real part of GE.
It is a mathematical model. People sometimes confuse the math with the reality.

Simply put our current physics model breaks down at the extremes. The closer the microscope gets, the less it mirrors reality.

For example, we can very accurately describe a collision between two cars. Our physics breaks down though describing some of the properties of collisions of a proton with another proton.

Dark matter, higgs boson, and string theory are the results of trying to explain physical behavior with our current math models.

We can accurately describe the motion and performance of an airplane. When you zoom the microscope into such things as the origin of lift force or boundary layer mechanics you will find much debate.

When I deal with vectors I am dealing with mathematical models but no one gets upset about that. At least not as
    long as they add up!

I don't believe that the "mirror image" thing is more than an analogy, any attempt at a proof or complete explanation
of vortex behavior. I think the big clues are the quotes used and the use of words "as if". I wonder how many pages
of detailed explanation "the reality" would take and what courses would be required to really understand the exactness
of 'where the air goes' that would render a significantly better, as opposed to deeper, understanding of how vortex
    behaves near ground for pilots?

I don't put that or circulation down on the level of an amoral pseudo-religious pyramid-scheme or beliefs that
boiling water will freeze quicker than cold water, among others.
