    Myself and 4 others are starting a design project. The goal is to design and build a scale RC model of the Harvard/Texan for use in evaluating the performance of alternative control surfaces.
    Without getting into too much detail, the research is towards ultra-stable flight for things such as aerial photography, surveilance, etc. In a similar manner to a ship that steams around without being tossed around by the waves very much, we're attempting to design an aircraft that is less affected by turbulence and gusts.

    The control surfaces of an aircraft give stability/control in 3 of the 6 degrees of freedom (4 if you count power) but the other 3 degrees are not handled.

    Long story short I'm looking for any reading material that you guys can recommend regarding control surfaces and innovations to airframes like speed brakes, leading-edge slats, canards, etc etc.

    My recommendation is not so much a book but rather a flight sim.

    I suggest X-plane for your early evaluations. Modifications to the 3D model in X-plane directly effect flight performance in the simulator.

    A 6dof RC aircraft able to do stable filming... as in helicopter?

    I remember seeing on an AVR projects board this guy had 5 microcontrollers and 3 piezo-gyros
    that kept his RC heli stable in flight. It made it fly arcade, point and go. He had a B/W FM
    TV to fly by and line up shots with and a good digital camera set up for remote and was selling
    aerial pictures.. in England back around 2001-2002.

    Seriously wind is less of a problem to light rotors than to light fixed wing, just from reading.

    Anyway I think that the motion of a plane would add to video made so I don't count planes out,
    just what you were saying about 6dof...
