No. Semantics is using different words to mean basically the same thing. In this case the differences are VERY important:Originally posted by pcisbest:
Hmmm... I think you guys are making this more complicated than it is. "realism," "reality," "difficulty," what we are getting into now is semantics.
Realism must not be confused with reality. The two words are VERY different. Realism and difficulty must also not be confused, as they are also very different.
It's not more realistic, because in real life a commander did not have to do these jobs alone: he had a computer and lots of well-trained professionals to help him.The basic fact is, gathering target data yourself versus having a supercomputing, 100% accurate officer "assist" you is more challenging, more realistic, and more difficult.
Harder doesn't necessarily mean more realistic. Sometimes harder can mean very UNrealistic (as anyone who has tried to survive an IL-2 campaign knows). You can say its more "realistic," more "difficult," or whatever, the word choice doesn't change the core idea that it is harder/more challenging/more realistic/closer to reality/more immersive than just pointing at a ship and getting a perfect firing solution.
I don't play at 100% realism because I think it is harder not more realistic. In real life, it was much easier, especially at night, to identify target course and speed. In the game, I find it too difficult just to see where the target IS let alone input the date. IL2 has the same problem, you need icons because the computer screen makes it too difficult to indentify the enemy.
Also, in RL a U-boat Kaptain could depend on his subordinates to keep watch, rest when tired, inform him when the enemy was about or they going to be attacked. He could also tell is XO to keep on course XYZ but keep the enemy in sight but not let him closer than 5,000 meters, etc. In the game you have to do it all yourself, because it is after a game.
However, I avoid racking up tonnage since that is unrealistic. U-boat Kaptains sunk anything that came into view, since they had no idea that something better would come along latter. The cherry picking of tonnage is very silly.

You avoid racking up the tons, then go onto say kaptains sunk anything that came into view? Then you say it isnt realistic. SO you dont hit everything you see, if you pass up anything then indeed you are cherry picking.
Difficulty/realism settings: Are you enjoying SH3? If yes, your settings are right, whatever they may be. If your getting mad/irritated/despondant with SH3, try changing your settings.![]()
As for 100k ton patrols, get a type IX sub, the 100k will come to you a few times in a career, even if you play "realistically".![]()

I guess I wasn't clear. My point was directed at people who pass up Coastal Merchants or Small Tankers because they don't want to "Waste" their torpedoes on the small fry. This is one way to reach 100K - but unrealistic.
I also think it "unrealistic" to let an Enemy ship go by, because you think it will take you some effort or more than one torpedeo to sink. But I agree sometimes it just isn't worth the risk or the number of torpedoes.
Obviously, when attacking more than one ship you go for the biggest target or whatever BDU thinks is the most important target.
Ok was going to say man, wasnt sure about your post lol. Ive had enough high tonnage patrols and am nearing the end of the war and the game is getting a tad boring to me so I just go out and sink everything I see, I mean I already got 10 times the tonnage the top u boat ace has so I basically have done it all and now find playing more of a job than fun. I think when I end this career, Im done playing. I was going to start a new career and use nothing but the type II but nah, after this war is over, so is my gaming on SH3. Ill stick around the forums though and offer advice and more recipes of course.
