Watched this on-line session of il-2 and was amazed to see some of the distances that planes were being shoot down. Is this common in on-line play? IMO more then a bit unrealistic historically speaking from watching gun camera footage of the real thing. What gives?

    1. From what I saw, they used primarily cannons. They don't lose power over larger distances, which is actually why the Luftwaffe used them effectively to attack bombers while staying almost out of the effective range of their gunners. (I just read a book which states kills from 110s against bombers were made at 300-450m and longer)

    2. Considering that, it clearly depends on what a/c you fly. With a stable fighter and large guns like the Tempest, that is no problem, with a P51 or Mustang III at the given distances, the video would have been a lot less spectacular.

    3. Online-playing is not like online-playing. As you see they don't stick to full real servers, so what if they also used easy gunnery on their own servers?

    4. Guncams are not realistic either. They are zoomed in to actually see the effects of the guns more clearly and they also are very much slowed down ( to 1/4 IIRC).

You should see me sniping an unsuspecting AI from over 600m... with big cannons it's a rare pleasure to take someone out at high distance.
I absolutely loved to snipe with big Me-262 gun .
Also online one will get stalked from 600m more or less regularly with cannons, 300m is practically point black range online .

Of course with MG's best is to wait until very close.

Once I manned A-20's rear gun position and it was insane to shoot out some crates 1km below me .
Easy gunnery bring the gunnery to another level really.

Also using P-51 vs Zeros on easy gunnery is much fun, they just explode most of the times .

As soon as I saw who the video was by I instantly knew not to take it seriously.

If anyone recalls the thread about "Banned for BnZ"- these are the guys who do that.

WW arcade server with jerks for admins.

1: Guys in WW2 couldnt practice as much as people can today with this sim.

2: In a Arcade server there is no reason at all to be conservetive with ammo, you can take off and be in action within 2 minutes and land again so quickly.

3: Those shots are not so amazing, they are done by good pilots all the time, but on that video all the great shots done over a long period are condescend into 5 minutes, making it look more impressive.

Whoa there Prien. No need for mudslinging.

As far as those gunnery ranges are concerned, the distances displayed in that video aren't really that extreme. Especially if you watch the rate of closure in some sequences.

As has already been stated, if "realistic gunnery" isn't being used you can drop birds from some ridiculously long distances too.

I didn't see anything unusual for online play. Most of the shots were still under 600 meters distance and most of the final killing blows were still landed as they closed the distance to 200 or 100 meters. The pilot in the video has good aim, slightly better than me I think, more consistent anyways but I didn't see a shot there I couldn't have made as well.
