I decided to buy one of those foam jigsaw exercise mats for use with YSFE. The mat is almost exactly the same size as the YSFE workout area. However, in the Kinect Tuner the mat shows up as a rectangle of constant "interference". I also noticed that in the Zen classes the water within the mat's area is constantly "rippling". If I put a blanket over the mat, the mat disappears from within the Kinect Tuner.

I am just wondering if anyone knows if the "interference" I am seeing within the Tuner has any effect on Kinect being able to track me. I am also wondering if anyone is using a mat made of a material that doesn't show up on Kinect's sensors.

I wish there was a way to repeat the same exercise over and over again so that we can see how changes to lighting or environment can effect tracking.

    Thanks.

Sorry it looks as though no one here has tried the mat you're using. If it's made to use with Kinect games perhaps you should contact customer service for the mat's manufacturers.

I am curious though, what exactly is the mat suppose to do for you?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The mat isn't anything specific for Kinect. It's just a regular exercise mat that you would use for cushioning during workouts, and/or protecting your floor.

I wanted something that would make certain exercises, like jumping jacks, a little less stressful. I also wanted to protect the floor where I will be working out almost everyday for the foreseeable future. The combination of sweat and friction on a daily basis is going to take its toll!

This is the mat that I got:

The size is perfect for YSFE. The only issue is the apparent interference/reflection.

Now I understand. It seems as though it would be a very good idea. If it's causing problems with Kinect in general it might be best to ask the XBox Kinect Setup Forum.

But it seems to me that it wouldn't be any different than any other floor covering or rug as far as Kinect it concerned. Do you place it on the floor before you turn on your Xbox or while the sensor is already active? I wonder if that would make a difference?

I have definitely noticed that there are certain textures/colors that if they are placed near me, the kinect will think are part of my continuous body, and will interpret me as a deformed monster of sorts. Things like a sweater hanging on a chair in the background will be incorporated to my avatar as some sort of strange growth.

Your mat is probably a color or texture that is hard for the kinect to distinguish. Have you tried recalibrating the kinect while the mat is out?

I have been using a cheap bright blue foam yoga mat and it hasn't had any problems.
