U.S. Identifies Vast Riches of Minerals in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON — The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.

This will intensify everything won't it?

When I first read this an image of a Russian general gritting his teeth with arms crossed came to mind.

On the bright side, at least everyone will know what they are fighting for now...

If it was properly exploited, this wealth could finally end the need for Afghan farmers to grow opium. Now that would be a real result!

I thought the same thing. Recently the Russians have been complaining that the Americans are not doing enough to destroy the opium fields as the opium ends up mostly in Russian society.

I predict that suddenly the right is going to care an awful lot about a stable and peaceful Afghanistan.

Of course, that will never happen. This just gives the various warlords all the more reason to dig in. What should be a stabilizing influence will only wind up being a destabilizing one, mostly because of how completely and absolutely the prior administration mismanaged the invasion.

Still, maybe far in the future this will give Afghanistan a real shot in the world.
