Or has Empire's glitchy start put everyone off...I presume its on Steam so no quick install and play on release day ...at least 2 or 3 hours downloading -if you have broadband...
Supposed to be 'engine' upgraded ...I notice Empire is loading faster nowadays but was crashing lots before latest Nvidia patch.
To be honest I still play and love Imperial Glory (heavily modded) .Im not really into the concept of Morale ....Certainly it was rare for soldiers to turn tail and run en masse in Napoleonic era ...was certain death from hail of musket fire in the back...
Ive given up on there EVER being a good WW2 RTS .I have no interest whatsoever in the 'strategy ' (if I wanted to build I could play my kids Bob The Builder game!) end and just like to play out the 'tactical' battles .

Empire has totally put me off Napoleon. napoleon was supposed to be an expansion to ETw, but they decided to cop out on ETW (leaving it half finished and still buggy) and go straight to napoleon.

If this is how they treat Empire then screw Nappy.

As for men running in the 18th century, well it happened a lot. I specifically bought books on 18th century warfare to learn more. Men often broke and ran ran once morale dropped and considering that musket reloading took at least 20 seconds there`s a good chance you could get some space before being hit in the back. The morale system is very realistic and was one reason I got into Total war. It`s great to see men get scared because you`re flanking them.

I love the strategy side as well and in my view you can`t have a good war game without strategy.

However, I`m not buying NTW, I already have ETW and I want that fixed first. If not fixed, then SEGA\CA receive no more cash.

I must look at Les grognards as graphics is not everything to me.

I would suggest that you look into the Close Combat series of games. My favorite is CC III with various mods made by fans of the game that cover even WW1, Spanish Civil War, VietNam, and the Cold War. You only play the tactical side of the battle in this game without worrying about having to build anything to get your units. What units you have available in your roster is what you are stuck with for better or worse. What I like about the game is the uncertainty factor, due to that whatever you see is what is in the unit's LOS such as seeing an enemy squad suddenly sprint across a street, only to disappear into a building. Also, a well planned attack can go awry because one of your tanks threw a track and it's stuck for good, so there goes some of your armored support. Another is having an inexperienced squad hesitantly cross a field due to low morale because of the chance that maybe an MG hidden in the hedges open up on them halfway across. If the squad decides to stay put and not advance, or give you the finger and run, then you have to deal with it. Never fear though. There are options to change the game conditions to your liking.

In my opinion, even though the game is from 1997 and the graphics are dated, the game's tactical focus is what pulls it through for me.

I'm gonna have to dredge up my CC2 cd now

I loved that game I wish they would maintain the same concept and apply it to a top down 3d engine and release a new version .

I agree about combat mission, I have them all and modded with better skins and more authentic sounds. The best tactical WW2 game so far, though I`d love a whole strategic campaign to it as well. The tactical aspects are extremely well done including many aspects of real battlefield war.

It does have a similarity to Total war games.

Seafire, I think you're confusing the close combat and combat mission series. Close combat was good in it's day, but combat mission has yet to be usurped as the leader of WW2 tactical combat.

I've been having a bash on the Theatre of War 2: Kursk Demo and we might well have a contender for top slot with this one. The whole thing's out in a month or so and I'm certainly going to be raiding the till for it.
