Bletchley Park, where code breakers worked tirelessly to unravel the intercepted Enigma encoded messages between BDU and U-Boats during WW2 has fallen into neglect, prompting academics to brand it a "national disgrace" that such a historic site was being allowed to fall into ruin. Makes for sad reading.

    Thats indeed a shame

Why is it so hard to preserve such institutions with government spending ?

I will never understand how politicians waste billions every year for useless nonsense and when you then ask them for money to preserve a piece of history they claim they dont have any.

Its the same over here, if it is something they dont want it is "Oh, this is impossible because of certain laws, we cannot change them so easily" but if its something they want "Lets change that certain pesky law ! Should take about one week to get that through the parliament"

I heard about that on the radio last night. It is indeed a very sad thing to hear about. Bletchley is not the only one to suffer from this, countless museums and artifacts are under the same threat in this country and the government will stand by and let such exhibits of our history vanish - amazing since our PM is all about Britishness, I think he has forgotten about our culture and rich history. Breaking the enigma codes was one of the most infuential things that helped shape the war.

    Thankyou

But the last time I signed a petition (U-534) it proved to be a waste of time...politicians... The phrase "Line them all up against a wall and shoot the wasters!" come to mind

Thanks for bringing this to our attention RJ

It's heartbreaking to think of such an important place in modern British history - in fact, world history - being neglected and falling into ruins. Unforgivable.

Just checked the 10 Downing Street website - there's already a petition running, currently with over 6,500 signatures:

    http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/BletchleyPark/

If you're a UK resident or ex-pat, sign it! If you're not British, ask any British people you know to sign it!

This one's even more important than U-534, in my opinion.

On a similar subject, read this article about the Western Approaches HQ museum in Liverpool:

A museum that must be cherished by the nation

If there's hope for the Western Approaches museum, surely Bletchley Park has a chance of being preserved too?

Given their intrinsic historical relationship, I think Bletchley and the Western Approaches should be 'sister' museums - like the Imperial War Museum in London, Manchester and Duxford, or the RAF museums at Hendon and Cosford.

With Jeremy Clarkson's admiration of ww2 history, he would be the right person to mention the petition on tv.

He's the kind of guy who wouldn't mind to spent a minute asking people to sign it.

Wrapped up in a tongue-in-cheek uboat debate with James May of course.

Just remember that he will fly in a spitfire in one episode of this season.

I signed up to a petition on the prime ministers web link for a national holiday to commemorate the fallen, cant remember the title but got a reply last week that 500,000 others did the same and its likely now to be implemented, issue is when.
Rather lottery money to this, preserving Bletchley Park, than some of the cr@p things they give it to like the olympics, thats got to be able to break even off its own back with just the TV rights all over the world but lottery pays, fat cats pocket the profit...... I know, trust me - they wont front with their own money and got the guaranteed payout once funding from the lottery was given. Basically they cant lose......
And Gordon being a 'Brit'...... your 'avin a larf mate..... Ask him after a few beers (or whiskies) and he wont say I'm British, it'll be I'm a Scot... oops, I mean a British Scot jimmy och aye.... Thats why he lives in Southern England, works in Southern England, makes his babies in Southern England and sends his wife to the homeland to have them, I mean a Scot cant have British kids eh?, nooooo, have to be born in the motherland. but then all mine were born in England, dont get me wrong I'm not knocking him for it but I wish these people would just tell it as it is.
I respect all who are loyal to their nation, I am English and will say so, Gordons a Scot and should say so..... Scotlands got its own parlaiment, the Welsh and N.Ireland have their own assemblies, England has nothing. We are the only nation in the EU not to have its own representation in the form of government, assembly or whatever. I personally dont like being discriminated against in my own country while others seem to get more better benefit from it, we're all 'British' after all aren't we?
I'm not racist at all but honestly believe I'm getting a raw deal here.
Aw nuts....... how the heck did I get started on this one!.
Oh well, life ban coming up.......
