I'm at a loss as to how the console works. A friend has set up a server, but is busy and has asked for help with the administration. Most of the SC stuff seems quite straightforward, but the manipulation of the server from another location leaves me confused. There seems to be no word on this in the help file, and google fails to turn up any hits.
He has set up the console port, but what does one use to connect? The box in SC seems to allow only an ip and 2 ports, presumably one for the game and one for the console, but no authentication field. How does an admin allow a specific person to run SC from location?
I'm desperate... cookies all around are up for grabs here... yes, it's that serious.

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with SC...I use FBD, so I'm just tossing out an educated guess here based on my experience with the way FBD works.
Is it possible that you administer the server with SC through the ingame chat function, after you have joined the server as a player? That's the way it is done with FBD. You can login as an admin, and send admin commands through the game chat, except they are preceded by a left-caret, "<".
I would think that SC works similarly in that respect, but I don't really know.

I've not used console option, I run mine via remote descktop.

damn. Ok, thanks guys. I've given up on the console.
My new problem is that SC doesn't seem to register deaths at all. My lives always stay at 0 deaths, no matter how often I whack into trees to test this. The planes and targets for a mission always stay at the top, as well. SC doesn't seem to register activity.
I've heard that this can be fixed with "ForceLogScan" turned to "on" but this has been done, and still no joy.
Thanks for the help.

Have you made a mission specific .ini file?
(another of my educated guesses
)

Yes, I have. No joy. I did find out that the .ini file is not important when you don't have ground targets, as general plane/pilot/time limits can be set from SC.
It's like SC can't read when an event happens... the score is updated, etc but nothing at all on SC side, ever.

Okay, more educated guessing here...
Make sure the server has log and logkeep enabled, so SC has a log to look at.
Also, might be a path issue in the configuration of SC.
Sorry, I'm used to fbdaemon, which polls the server for stats every few seconds, and doesn't consult the log.

Thanks for the help. How do I make sure the server is spewing out logs? Is it a .ini setting?
I miss my GUI

Yes, in the confs.ini, under [Console] section, there are some lines:
[Console]
LOG=1
LOGTIME=1
LOGFILE=logs.lst
LOGKEEP=1
Just so you know, I've now completely run out of educated guesses, and all I have left are the wild-***ed ones.
