Yep, been there, done that. That describes MY first patrol exactly. Didn't even know there were neutrals in the game. I don't know what my second was but the first was even before hostilities had been declared. I think I killed the patrol before I even finished it. Ah, me; learning experiences.Originally posted by legodragonxp:
1939 Neutral Coastal Merchant off the coast of Norway. Single torp. What do you mean 'neutral ship destroyed?' Doh!
<--My buddy, after watching this whole debacle.
A Destroyer, I think it was a Tribal. I sailed U-45 (my Type VIIB) up the English channel to get to my patrol zone just of the West coast of Eire. The weather was clear and it was a moonless night. I ordered her up from 20m to periscope depth and scanned around, only to spot the destroyer just outside 1000m (I was being a n00b and had nobody on sonar... *sigh*
He was steaming at 7 knots pretty much 90 degrees off my bow, so I came up with a quick solution, set the torps on fast, and closed the range down to 900m. I opened the bow doors and let him have it with a full spread, in eager anticipation of the imminent fireworks display.
Alas it was not to be. I didn't know about the differnet fuses/depth settings, so it was set to magnetic. Out of the 4 torps, one went wide, one went deep, and 2 thumped into the side of the ship and failed to explode.
Suddenly I felt trapped as he started pinging frantically and coming hard to port so I crash dived, right into the sea floor. I pulled myself back up to periscope depth and came to ahead flank, foolisly trying to outrun the DD. In a fit of panic, raised the scope and looked behind to see him barreling down on me from directly astern and closing the distance fast.
I fired tube 5 and he must have crossed a wave or something, because the fish went directly under him and exploded close against the hull. I am presuming it exploded under the magazine or something because there was a huge explosion and the ship broke in two. I proceeded at flank speed out of the channel and escaped to Wilhelmshaven for repairs.
Since then, I've (a) - read the manual and (b) - take the long way round to get into the atlantic
