BP has successfully installed a new containment cap on the leaking Gulf of Mexico oil well which will drastically reduce the amount of oil gushing out. The leak is estimated to be up to 60,000 barrels of oil per day…
With the hurricane season looming, BP has warned that its "efficiency and ability to contain the oil and gas cannot be assured". The new cap was installed by robots a mile below sea level and replaces the previous one that failed to completely siphon the entire flow of oil for collection at the surface.
With that in mind, I’m sure everyone here will wish BP’s latest effort every success into quelling the leaking Gulf of Mexico oil well…
I'm curious to see the results of the pressure tests. The forums over at the Oildrum have been saying for weeks that the internal well casing is probably compromised, in which case all bets are off. On the other hand the half-life of crude oil in open Gulf water is two months, and approximately two to three Exxon Valdez's worth of crude from natural seeps is handled by the gulf every year so I'm sure it will work out either way.
It's good if this worked...
...but I'm hardly ready to pat BP on the back for taking three months to rectify a mistake that never should have happened and has poisoned the environment for decades. And for nothing more than corporate greed at that.
I'd love nothing more than for BP to become insolvent at this point. I'd celebrate that.
Exxon's been given the nod to go for a take-over. That do?Originally posted by GoToAway:
