Ok , I have found out something important about Submarines. They really don't like being driven at speed into an island!!!!! Ooops. I'm good at this.
I am struggling to find shipping its odd. They appear on the nav map but no matter what I do they simply don't appear in the attack map or persicope view. I did get a few sound contacts this time but couldn't get to see them. I'll keep battling. Better keep away from my bosses tho!

One last suggestion, check your map scale. You may think you are getting close because they seem to be only an inch or so away, but depending on scale, that inch might still be 15 or 20 miles. You may be giving up too quickly.
Try submerging to 70 or 80 feet at ahead slow, see if you pick up anything on your sonar/hydrophones. If you do then surface and run on that bearing. Those contacts are usually fairly close.
If you are involved in a stern chase and you aren't a lot faster than they are, you are not going to catch them. If you are closing in from 90 or 270 degrees and aren't covering the ground fairly quickly, again, you are not going to get into a good position, if you see them at all.
If they ain't tied up to a pier, they are moving, so you have to look for them, they will not be where they started out.

I got to STRESS that you got to draw a line in the direction that the ship is traveling and get as close as you can, in order to see a ship you have to be in visual range otherwise you will only see the beautiful ocean. don`t give up. it took me a week in SH III to see a ship up close...and then he sunk me..it was a destroyer...
P.S....A task force might be a bit tricky for a newbie...quiet a few war ships will be on you if you do a slip up.

All good advice.
Just remember sink everything.... junks, sampans, fishing boats... everything. Also your deck gun is your friend. I have sunk 12 or 14 Ships before using my first torpedo in most patrols.

DBWolf has it right.
Get the angle, and make a ruler line to follow.
You may notice, when zoomed out a bit, that there is a
time on the contact, the older it is, the less likely
it is to be there anymore.
If you want to get tricky, use the compass to make a
circle or two on where they could get to in a given
time. They usually follow the original track, and don't
vary much unless they are attacked. Then they zig all
over the place.
It will make sense after a few contacts...

Thanks guys
Good News !!! I sunk my first ship, oh it was a tough battle but that 2t fishing boat never stood a chance. I fired my torpedo at it before realising it was just a fishing boat. Then I managed two gun boats and a Destroyer :-)
Unfortunately I ran out of torpedoes , gun ammo and rather more importantly.... Fuel!
But I feel better that I could find them thanks to your advice. One thing I still get no radar at all. I started this in a tambor in 1943 using the Flavoured to taste mod. Still didn't have radar! The mod is definately active because I didn't get the load up movies and the buttons were going green
Also anyone else have problems with the keyboard commands after installing the mod. Return doesn't fire my torpedoes anymore.
But still I feel more positive about it all now

Are you sure you equipped your sub with radar at base before you left?
Also the FTT2.4 mod removes the return/enter key as a firing key. You have to press the red button with the mouse.

Ahh no, I always start outside the base! That explains that then! Shame you have to equip yourself , you would have thought the US navy would have supplied you with Radar! I love how the new mod starts you off alot nearer the action area. Never mind , I'll start from base see what I can do.
