    Evolution of FAR CRY….?

You know, I probably will end up getting FAR CRY 6, as I’m pretty bored of my games at present.

But looking at the footage, I’m honestly scratching my head thinking this doesn’t look or play massively different from FAR CRY 3 & 4….

I mean if I loaded up FAR CRY 4 right now I bet I’m gonna get like 75-80% of what I’m
    getting in FAR CRY 6.
The game even looks like it’s running on the same engine! And then same guns, same animations, same assets — so much is recycled.

I’ve always stuck up for Ubisoft games, as I think for a long time they made the most ‘open’ open worlds you can play. I still think that. I think they have pioneered a lot of features and mechanics that have been copied by many other games. They actually don’t get enough credit.

But looking at the footage, I’m honestly scratching my head thinking this doesn’t look or play massively different from FAR CRY 3 & 4….

Usually — I’m OK with “if it aint broke…” design philosophy that they have. If it works — then yeah keep it in the game.

But I cannot shake the feeling of MEH when looking at the footage. It just looks like same game….

In fact, the FAR CRY games now almost feel like a continuously updated mod for the same original game than bonafide sequel.

So although I remain hopeful. I’m not sure whether FARCRY 6 is going to cure my boredom.

    Good grief.

I've played enough Far Cry since 2005. A lot has changed. Originally the games from 2004 to 2007 all use CryEngine 1. Since Ubisoft bought Far Cry from Crytek, each moved on in their separate ways. Crytek moved on to Crysis, kept the linear gameplay and tropical setting, but also keeps the science fiction stuff. Crytek made it with CryEngine 2. Ubisoft made Far Cry 2 with Dunia, but based its gameplay and story to be grounded in reality. It was even to the point of being too real, which lead to annoying game mechanics they later scrapped in Far Cry 3. Of course the Far Cry series run on Dunia, it's always been on the same game engine. You even see the name 'Dunia' when you launch each Far Cry game. It's like how Crysis 2 and 3 still run on CryEngine despite being the updated versions like CryEngine 3. Why would it be on a different game engine? Crytek kept pushing for photorealism for PC exclusive whereas Ubisoft pushed for photorealism within the limits of the hardware of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Ubisoft may have used Unreal Engine in the past, notably Tom Clancy games, but they design Dunia to be exclusively for Far Cry. It's just like how they designed Anvil and AnvilNext for the Assassin's Creed series. They even made Snowdrop for The Division. But why would Ubisoft stop using Dunia for Far Cry? It's already a good engine, why scrap it? It makes sense that Ubisoft stopped using CryEngine and Unreal Engine and they moved on to develop their own game engines. The most obvious reason is licensing, and they already have the budget to start anew. It wouldn't make sense to completely abandon a game engine they made and start from scratch again.

Using the same guns is not a valid argument, because the weapons are mostly based on real life weaponry. Far Cry 1 had more fictional weapons, but Ubisoft wanted the series to be grounded in reality since Far Cry 2. Therefore, real life guns. Call of Duty and Battlefield also use real life weapons. Your argument might as well apply to any series with sequels using the same weapons. That's like saying Halo or Gears of War should stop using the same weapons they already had established and make it completely different. If these games abandoned these weapons, fans of the series will not be satisfied. The animations are different in each game and you know it. As for assets, you know that's not true. Tropical settings in the Pacific, unnamed African setting based on Kenya, the Himalayas, and Montana and now the Caribbean. They don't have the same assets and you would know this if you used the map editor in each game.

Far Cry 3 fixed a lot of problems Far Cry 2 had, and a lot of people were satisfied with it. They didn't really have to change the formula enough since Far Cry 3 became renowned for what it is today. Far Cry 4 introduced buzzards, Far Cry 5 introduced attack helicopters and planes, and now we have tanks in Far Cry 6. Far Cry 3 didn't have such things and these really change the series a lot. If it changes too much, people will complain. If it hardly changed, people will complain. People were already content with what is seen in Far Cry 3, and you couldn't even fly a helicopter or use a tank in that game. There's already a lot of changes for Far Cry 6 and yes, it's a sequel. It wouldn't make any sense if they abandon the structure past games had set up. Far Cry wouldn't really be a Far Cry game without the open wilderness and its FPS gameplay.

If you want to think about mods, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon would be a good example as a game that gives off vibes of being a mod. Instead its an April Fools joke that became a game that was already cheap at launch. Far Cry 6 is not and you can tell. It already looks good, and I don't expect it to be a completely different game.

    LaMoi, you'd do the same.

They've found formula that works and brings money......any sudden movement may spoil the case.
    Changings should be gradual.
With constant monitoring the audience's reaction.

    FC3 - was a milestone.

Many people expected FC4 as something new......and were dissapointed that it was practically the same game only in another location.
    FC5 was the same again.

New Dawn - was also a milestone.
Many people didn't like entourage of the game, colours. But it was a turning point.

Far Cry 6 will be something like FC3 + New Dawn.

Far Cry 7 can't be like only FC3 + New Dawn.
    Something new is needed.

    Because PEOPLE DON'T LIKE REPETITIVENESS.

LaMoi, what do you want to add to the game?
What do you want to change?
How do you see that EVOLUTION?

Yeah... and its been pretty obvious from the get go this wasn't going to be a drastic departure from what we've been getting for the last 9 years so it shouldn't have been a surprise in the slightest...

The most hilarious part about these types of posts to me, is that in the event they do make a far cry that is radically different from what we've come to expect, there'll be a slew of threads about how they've changed too much and it's "no longer far cry"...

Posts like these done before game release, although I respect the opinions of other players, are purely speculative at this point.

Will FC 6 be a home run? I don't know, let's let the team step up to bat first before we call a strike.

Just based on the game play and story that has been revealed so far it sure looks like FC 6 will be an extremely entertaining romp on many levels... story... acting.... game play etc. But we'll see. As I said, it hasn't gone up to bat yet.

    Just my 2 cents.

    No real surprises really.

I’ve not been massively excited about FC6 more been bubbling away in the background. I always knew what I’d be getting.
My attention has turned to it recently due to there being a shortage of games and I’m bored of what I have currently.

But recently watching the walkthroughs — Cmon folks, Cmon…..

I have actually been shocked by how many animations have been recycled; reloading guns, climbing, pulling yourself up from a ledge etc are all ripped right from FC3&4.

Guns. Yes same set of guns! But let me be more specific. Same EXACT models!

I mean — yeah — I’m fine with if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but 3 games on you would think they would at the very least update the game with a new suite of animations for the players various actions…??

There’s new knife/machete takedowns which look great. Why not update more… ? New animations don’t mess with the mechanics of the game. Animations for specific actions are time framed anyway.

You think if they were insistent of having the same selection of guns, they would remodelled them for FARCRY 6.

There’s just all kinds of little things that you would expect to be updated in a proper sequel…….? No…?

    I dunno maybe I’m crazy!

I have played FC5 so much more than any other entry. It's the best instalment in the series by far right after FC2, so FC6 got it very hard imo to surpass the FC5 experience, not to mention in the ost department.

New Dawn was kinda of an involution with the rpg system applied on weapons, and sadly I see something of it in fc6 videos, which is no good news to begin with. What new dawn took to new standards was the design of the expedition maps. OMG now those were truly outstanding locations, in particular the Alcatraz one.

Here's just hoping FC6 isn't trying to cater FC3 braindead fans too much since it was probably the entry I liked the less.

    See I disagree…

FAR CRY 5 was pandering to more casual fans.
They introduced a HALO type regenerating health system, they got rid of immersive interaction animations like skinning animals, healing animations.
Wildlife interactions were ramped up to absurd levels — like you could not walk 20ft in the wilderness without getting mauled by 3 bears and a Wolverine! It was nuts. It was the same on the roads, enemy patrols were every 10 seconds.
It was like the world was made for a child with ADHD! It felt like FAR CRY 4 on speed…

We're a million miles from Far Cry (1) and I'm glad of it.

2 was so boring I never finished it.

3, 4, 5 and the add-ons all had something to offer.

6 looks different enough to be enjoyable, I think we're good.

    Yep. It might be.

But shouldn’t we expect slightly more from a fully fledge sequel?

I mean the things I’ve mentioned above are hardly radical….

It is £60 (which is the cheapest version). That’s quite a lot of money no??
