"Legacy Ubisoft Gamers", you've got to be kidding me, right? (btw, i am happy you met your wife in a game, i hope this happen with me too)
Anyone with brains, will agree two things, this is not a game with sir. Tom Clancy's would be happy if he is alive (even if he don't give a **** about videogames), and second, why just don't create a new IP? Why to paste a famous franchise title in this game? And i don't want this game to fail, but, Ubisoft is more lost than ever, how a business, a videogame publisher and developer, which i became a constantly and frequent player (because the older games, which is a beautiful masterpiece, even with the flawless), start to doing generic games.
I still don't know why everyone thinks Tom Clancy is rolling in his grave. He was an idea man, and wanted to give the world a heavy dose of reality sure. But he wasn't anti-fun.
As an idea man, I think he'd find it interesting to have those universes crossover. The hope is if we really want to stay true to Tom Clancy's style of reality hits hard for this game, then we need to give the playable characters depth and give people who may not know the franchise a fun way to dip their feet. If the modern culture weren't so utterly cynical, I daresay it could help more people find an entry point into his stories and the ideas they have behind them.
Is this the best way to go about it? I cannot argue that it may not be. I feel like the title xDeviant actually would be more proper for this game's feel. The game itself is a massive deviation from the Tom Clancy aesthetic, the characters and factions in it are deviating greatly from their supposed factions by fighting alongside potential enemies, and the punk style says more Deviant than Defiant to me.
Unless this is literally Ubisoft's way of being defiant of all the haters and their way of saying "We're doing this whether you like it or not." Ok, xDefiant may not be that bad if that's the case then.
As far as the community: We want Tom Clancy fans at the core of this because many of us are passionate about the games the factions come from. I've tried to get my brother to play Ghost Recon Breakpoint, but he just does not get into military style shooter stories at all. He does play Apex Legends however, and does very much enjoy the story behind their cinematics, comics, character design, and even little tells on the map for upcoming content.
If xDefiant takes a similar approach to the "dipping your feet" level of story depth to the game, you'd be surprised how many more people it could draw to the franchise. And if Mark Rubin is being totally honest that they want this to be a community driven thing, then we now have an opportunity to create a positive community for everyone to enter the Tom Clancy community.
That's why some of us want there to be a "Legacy Ubi Gamers" community. Some of us love the games so much we want to share them. Personally, everyone I try to share Breakpoint with has this stigma about Ghost Recon.
My brother is a big Dark Souls fan, and even trying to sell the "You can make it realistic levels of difficult" wasn't enough to sell him because reality simulation is not something he enjoys in gaming the same way. However he did play a bit of the Division 2(he didn't care for it in the end) and I feel like having small snippits of Wolves' story come through in xDefiant may be enough to spark his intrigue into digging deeper into the Ghost Recon world I enjoy so much. And by the way, he's tried playing Breakpoint with me. He runs around and tries to have fun, but it's pretty clear he's just not that into it which is totally ok. I want to enjoy it WITH him, not just drag him around with me while I enjoy it. That's the ultimate goal here for me.
Inspiration and motivation are a funny thing, and this absolutely could be a way for Ubisoft to get Tom Clancy to a broader audience, learn from the experiences of working directly with the community, and improve the Tom Clancy franchise moving forward greatly. I really hope the folks who are seeing negative things can take a little bit of this hopeful energy many of us clearly have and give the game an honest chance!
P.S. That being said, Ubisoft has to know this could be a pivotal game for them. I get the gut feeling that a complete flop here could be a serious blow to the Tom Clancy franchise entirely. We love and support you while you're walking on egg shells guys!
P.S.S. Wtf is a "Generic Game"? It sounds to me like people have an incessant need to stack games up against other, previously made titles and if certain aspects match up with top sellers they are suddenly "Generic". But your inability to look past singular influences from designers that have multitudes of experience across multiple titles, as well as a desire as gamers to create something somewhat familiar with a twist is not a problem with the studio. It's your problem. If that mentality had been applied to the days of Half-life 1, Counter-Strike never would have gotten off the ground. "It's just a game made from some other people's engine. What a ripoff." And if that hadn't gone anywhere, we may not even have Steam, or any of the work they've done to improve the gaming community as a whole. Please knock that garbage off.
While i do understand fully the complaints about what tom clancy legacy is with this mashup of crazy stuff that seems outlandish with his mostly spy thriller. This game does reminds me of few others FPSs that i played a decent amount over the years that i really enjoyed such as blacklight tango down and ghost in the shell first assault, so quite optmistic here for this game
Yeah, I for sure don't think this is particularly generic. I've always been the type to assess things based on how all the mechanics work together as opposed to whether the mechanics are unique, because quite honestly there are very few truly unique mechanics left to create. Look at something like Overwatch for example. If you look at nearly every individual aspect it's pretty much all been done before. It's how it's all meshed together that makes the end product its own.
Honestly I've been a fan of Ubi games for a long time and to be honest I haven't felt so excited for an Ubi game in a long time - For Honor and Far Cry were the last games recently to make me really hyped for an Ubi game. I loved For Honor and really enjoyed being part of the For Honor Community. I dipped out a few years back because I felt I'd spent enough time with For Honor but jumping back into the Ubi community again to get involved in discussions with this game is cool.
I look forward to hopefully playing when there are tests on consoles.
Thanks,
Derri
As a dedicated Division 2 PvP player this is game a breath of fresh air considering Div 2 PvP has never had any substantial updates since Redstorm left the game over 2 years ago.. , I really hope they listen to the community when it comes to improving the game through the beta test and what people are asking on the official discord , as for all this Tom Clancy garbage the only real "Tactical" game ubi has is R6 Seige and Streamers will **** on any game as its click bait
