I the end I started using my Scarlett 2i2 with rocksmith and it worked flawlessly with one thing to keep in mind: if the audio input comes from it, the output should also be there. So I had to use my headphone monitor output on Scarlett with direct monitor toggle switched to off.
Quite an expensive solution for this game, but luckily I had it lying around.

ASIO in/out on the same device is going to give you the best performance. If you have a device that has ASIO drivers that is the way to go. With a RTC on Windows you're at the mercy of the Windows sound system. It will be ok but not as good as a full on ASIO implementation which will skip the Windows sound system.

Are there wiki's on this ASIO stuff?

Seems like people trip themselves up and blame everyone.
