Easy AI competitors taking islands even when I said “no”

I picked the “easy AIs” Bente, Qing and Willie, because I hate how the other expand aggressive and start to hoard all islands, especially when they take one I took eye makes me very angry.

I usually said “no” (I would say “yes” sometimes but I don’t know what island they want, I read it is shown somehow but there is time limit to reply).

Yet after some hours of game play, Bente ask, I said “no”, yet after some moments I hear the message “A rival has colonized a new island” WT*?
I thought I might have clicked wrong or something, but happened 3 times at least in my last play.

Someone knows what is going on? Is this a glitch or working as intended? Something in particular triggers this?

SIDE NOTE: My last play when this happened was some months ago (January-February), but I am to start a new game and want to know this before configure my rivals and invest many hours.

    Hello,

Playing with the AI was always very boring after a certain while, and now with all the DLC not very possible.

Anyways i meet this problem on any game i have made before with theses AI .. So I am not really sure but i think you must be in the same continent before give the respons and i agree that it was not easy every time to find the ilsland they want .

It could be a "phasing " bug.

It also happened to me, though it was quite rare. Maybe the dialog didn't show because another one was being played at that moment, I can't remember...

The best advice I can give is not to delay too much the colonization of islands in which you are interested. During early game, you can buy some steel beams from Archibald Blake if you still don't produce them yourself.

Also, when you are asked by an IA if you allow him/her to colonize, there's a small button associated to the dialog (the same as for quests) that switches the view to the island in question.

That's the way how Bente plays. she always take over islands, even if you said 'no'. She is the only easy AI who play that way.

Oh thank you that's useful info. I hope then it is safe to start a game jus with Qin and Willie.

In my case i doubted if something rare happened, but no because the first time caught me by surprise, but happened to me at least 3 times and by then I was more alert.

Sadly I'm pretty sure it doesn't only happen with Bente. Princess Qin did it a lot with me, and Willie also did it a couple times.

That's why I recommend to simply be the first to colonize. For example, use your flagship, load it with some timber and steel beams, and then just sail over the world and colonize the islands you are interested in. Later if you are finally not interested anymore in an island just remove the warehouse and that's all.

The easy AI is mostly well-behaved. However, once they really get into a pinch concerning a certain resource (like copper. zinc or a specific fertility) that blocks their ability to progress then they will take an island. So if you grant them islands that cover all the basic goods then they should remain well-behaved for the rest of the game.

Thank you I was just starting a game without competitors, but I was considering restarting with Willie and Qing if it was only Bente, since it’s not only her and is not sure or if we and control what triggers it better to keep my new rivaless game, I don’t want surprises after hours of work, just chill out and have fun.

In my games this only happened while I am in another session (e.g. new world) and click on the dialoge box.

If I jump to the location with my camera and observe their ships, they behave like they should and do not settle the island. I got used to only clicking no after my camera is on their ships and it worked every time with all three easy opponents. It is probably a bug.
