Workaround for crash directly after intro and for fullscreen

I bought Settlers I - History Edtion today and was exited to play it, only to realize that it won't start although it is supposed to be Windows 10 compatible now. After unsuccessfully looking for a solution online, I tinkered around a bit myself and found a workaround. As I'm probably not the only one with this problem, I though I'd directly share my solution. So here it goes.

    Problem:
When starting the game via Ubisoft Connect it plays the intro video but crashes afterwards. Also, the black bars around the main game area show some green stripes.

    Solution:
    1. In the folder where the game is installed, right-click the Settler1.exe (not sure about that name, I just translated it from the german version's Siedler1.exe).
    2. Select "Properties" and go to the tab "Compatibility".
    3. Here select "Run app in compatibility mode" (or similar, again not sure about the translation).
    4. From the dropdown choose "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" (which is often recommended for older games but other might work, too).
    5. Then start the game directly by double-clicking Settler1.exe (Ubisoft Connect doesn't seem to be able to start it anymore itself).
    6. However, the settings should be still executed from Ubisoft Connect (Play -> Config), as Settlers1Config.exe seem to miss some options (e.g. display size).

    Bonus:
To get Settlers I running in (windowed) fullscreen, have a look at Borderless Gaming: https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming/releases
Rough instructions: install it, run it while Settler1.exe is running, open it up via the task icon and move "The Settlers" from the left to the right list. The game should now toggle into fullscreen.

Hello there coolkuh! Welcome to the forums

Thanks for sharing your workaround on how to avoid crashing in The Settlers 1: History Edition! Hopefully, this can help other players who may be encountering the same issue.

Please note that Ubisoft Support is unable to promote the use of 3rd party software as a workaround, as this can conflict with game files and cause issues running the game.

Players are welcome to try suggestions regarding 3rd party software, but you would be doing so at their own risk, and Ubisoft Support will be unable to assist regarding any issues that may result from using third-party software to modify game files in an unauthorised way.

    Thanks!
