    PSA: On fighting warhounds

More often than not when i see people shooting a dog unit that rushes them. They try to empty out their mags on the body (armor plate) in some sort of mexican stand off to see who goes down first.

But there are faster ways to kill dogs.

Shooting the legs on any of the dog variants will completely ignore the armor plate and deal Crit damage directly to the dog's health *provided you hit with crits.
If you have a headhunter buff / gunslinger buff with regulus / Focus with nemesis. You can even one tap them in any part of the leg.
This is where the unpopular emp sticky comes in handy. Even on a 0 yellow build it takes them down long enough for you to empty a few mags uninterrupted. Allowing a single guy with a descent DPS build to easily take them out in a scaled to 4 instance on legendary difficulty.

Additionally there are more weak spots to take advantage of (most people are aware of these , but i'll write them out regardless.)

    • Sniper Dogs have a weakness right next to the barrel ( red ammo box)
    • Mortars Dogs have a similar red ammo bar on their "behind".But they also have a spot on the hinge of the gun that ignores the armor plate just like the legs do.
    • Gunner Dogs have red shoulder joints you can take out.
    • Heavies Same goes for the big boys. Most people are aware that the plate on their buttocks breaks easier, however this isn't always easy to get to. They too have a spot that ignores the armor plate completely. This spot is on the inside of the backpack they carry.

Yes there are more ways to take them out and feel free to add those, like the crossbow bolts, ravenous ,etc. By and large most people just shoot at them.
And whenever I see 3 guys having a go a cracking the shell, in the same time frame i have the dog down to 1/4 of it's health just by shooting the legs by myself . I often wonder how much more efficient that encounter could have gone.

    TLDR;

If you have high crits go for the legs. If you don't, shoot the armor plate or other weakspots.

The point is not to bash anyone doing it their own way but to let people know there is more that one way to skin a warhound. And some of those ways are a lot faster.
Good luck and have fun Agents.

I have three ways to easily kill war hounds:

    1. Scorpio (a few quick shots and it temporarily shuts down from EMP status, after which I can easily unload into it)
    2. Stinger Hive (combined with Test Subject it'll even shred a named War hound in seconds)
    3. Two quick missile shots (for anything using Technician specialization)

Never had to worry about where I was shooting...

It's probably because shooting legs is difficult. They're a narrow target that moves. The center of mass is often MUCH easier to hit.

Rule of thumb: shoot the red spots / areas.
Works for everything, chungas (hehe), dogs, quadcopters, grenadiers, flamers, etc.

Or use shocks, or sheer brute force.

Very true. And it's worth noting there is a red area (weak point) on the hounds - right next to their gun/grenade launcher, etc.

Or just load them up with a Pestilence stack...then get up, put on your sunglasses, and walk away in slow motion as they collapse and explode behind you.
