As much as I hate to say it, I think Microsoft has the right idea on how to combat cheating on teh PC platform. When you install a game via the MS store, it installs to a directory that you cannot modify. Just like Playstation and Xbox consoles are more secure by their nature of being locked down by design, so is the directory structure windows store uses to install games. Obviously, this does not go over well by the majority, because "I paid for my hard drive so I have every right to have complete contr0ol over the entire thing".
That is the most common argument, and sorry to say it isn't a valid one. Console owners paid for their hard drives too. iPhone customers paid for their entire device too, yet many are happy to let Apple have complete control so the user can't run and poke out an eye.
I myself have always been one to argue against this sort of thing. But honestly, I think we are at a time where the PC gaming community would be better better off relinquishing control and embracing secured games.
Look at the issues this game has had recently. The instability we suffered through -- which is gone now, BTW -- would have been a lot easier to pinpoint the issue if this game were installed in a fashion that it can't be tampered with -- or broken -- by the user. The Ubisoft support script always focuses on the player and their system and configuration, right? Well, securing the game by making it not user tamper able would make issues like that get resolved a lot quicker.
I would love to explore the PvP aspects of this game, but co-op play is more my thing. But if I do spend time on PvP, it sure as heck is not going to be a game that is widely exploitable. I really, really liked playing GTA but the cheaters made that game unplayable. I don't think this game is anywhere near that level of BS, but there certainly is room to improve.
I know Ubisoft has a fairly large legal team and they do go after makers of cheats. I am not a legal expert, but from my view I'd like to see it in headlines a little more often. But I am certain that their experts know a lot more about this than a playing customer does, and I personally trust they they are as aggressive as possible.
I know it tends to ruffle a lot of feathers when videos are taken down or threads closed for "naming and shaming". But to be honest, naming and shaming hurts the game more than it helps. Because that ties up their resources because they have to go on the defensive -- from people filing defamation suits for allowing witch hunting in public forums.
Becuase, you would never guess, that often it turns out to be a situation of a very skilled and experienced player legitimately besting an opponent.
But they don't help the situation when they point things in the game like negotiators dilemna, because an inexperienced player might think that is "shooting through walls".
