Since fc6 is found lacking it would be great to see some community competitions for map makers in FC5 again. Many thanks to SamPlays, steve64b PB1 and the rest of the very long list of mapping community members who have done, do now, and I trust ever will, support the creative aspect of the far cry franchise.
I have been taking a break from mapping but would love to return to it.
I am currently unaware of any discord groups, zoom etc in the community and would gladly get more involved in assisting to create a more structured mapping community.
I think the theme of the month map competitions were great back in the day and would love to see these return somehow.
Some of you will remember when we had fcmaps with champ, maxpower and others - kudos to those and all the guys who have made the mapping community possible along the way during times when ubi were doing very little to support us or provide any sort of assistance to what the majority of the community required.
Is anyone else thinking along these lines of using the fc5 editor to continue the legacy that was started by us all. I think we were all hoping the map editor would be an essential part of every main far cry game, but now it obviously has been nerfed. Or do we just move on and do something else. Either way, I just wanted to say I have so much respect for all of the mapping community so if its the end then its the end, but if you need me for anything, I will always be happy to contribute to the map making community, call on me anytime, day or night. but the way i see it, ubi have put the final nail
I will stick with FC5 editor especially with Steve64b’s mod opening up so many possibilities for map creation. The only games that hold my interest are ones that have editors or files that are editable. Hell, I was still making Carmageddon 2 vehicles and maps 10 years after its release. Yeah, I’m old.
its just a shame FC5 editor doesnt have the few things we asked for to make the game infinite, like level linking to make campaigns, checkpoints for respawn after dying, and a wider range of game modes.
Its still a great map editor, but unlike dreams or using another engine, not really possible to make a full game or story, which could easily be done with a few additions to the current map editor. Also things like being able to put in pick me ups that are readable.
The map size is still way too small to build any kind of significant environment, it would need to be about 16x larger, also missing interactive quest givers to be able to construct a full level.
I doubt anyone at Ubi will be innovative enough or have a vision of a stand alone map editor in the future as they seem to be following a downward trend and content to make campaigns only.
So much potential just buried by Ubi and because its a company, not one individual there will feel responsible and yet they all are if they did not speak up about it.
The problem is that the community is rather fragmented. Kind of makes sense, since everyone is on their own platform these days.
On Xbox, Sam Builds is still doing a periodic themed Community Creations Challenge, where map makers currently just submitted their (xbox) maps in the "Generic Shapes & Custom Structures" theme. I'll expect a video of the resulting maps to pop up in a week's time or so.
One of the next themes will be making a Far Cry 6 inspired map in Far Cry 5 Arcade. More info on his Discord server at https://discord.gg/YCGPePU2mF.
Sam is on xbox only, maybe someone from the community could host/cover maps on other platforms or maybe MapSwap them over to xbox. Then that way, everyone in the community would be able to participate.
I am not aware of any community competitions at this time on PS4 and PC, But, over the years, I did some projects to support the community the best I can:
- For PC users, I created an editormod, that gives map makers less restrictions and more freedom in building their maps. More assets, retexturable and customizable. Currently even testing customizing the AI to a degree. With the editormod installed, people can also share and import custom object selections. Fallen.Ninja made a website with shared custom community objects, ready to be pasted in your maps.
- For console, I did manage to get some modded template maps published that give you a bit more assets to work with:
- My template map #2 "More Music+Assets" map published on all platforms is the latest incarnation, featuring additional music scripts, and more re-texturable objects. It is packed with features, which may slow down some consoles though. At least on PS4, VGuyMarvel aka Restylex republished a slimmed down version of the map, titled "Steve64b editor tool".
- My initial template map #1 "More Assets + Scripts" has hundreds more objects than the second one, but may be too much for the editor to handle.
Community wise, you may want to check out:
- Sam Builds Discord, for editor chat and tips.
- Official Far Cry Discord, has a custom maps channel, not really much activity.
- Far Cry Modding Discord, more technical, mostly about game modding on PC rather than map editor.

- Far Cry Maps FB group, for custom map showcases.
