I'm biased with Shaolin, too, but I suppose my expectations are pretty high now that we've seen what the devs are capable of with reworks and TG changes. My picks for next TG changes are Shaolin, Jorm, Valkyrie, Highlander, and Shinobi.
As for deflect damage, I agree. I think the argument I heard the devs make was how there were too many "accidental" deflects since the dodge heavy and deflect input are the same, hence why the damage of the deflect is at a middle ground between a side dodge attack for 16 and a neutral heavy for 24.
However, a lot of other characters also have inputs that are the same for dodge attacks and deflects. In this case, it isn't worth deflecting light attacks with Shaolin since a normal light parry will get more damage. Get 3 parries in one round and you're looking at 12 extra damage as opposed to just deflecting. It's worth deflecting heavies, but it should be worth just deflecting in general since Shaolin is prone to GB due to Shaolin having less I frames on his dodge.
The other arguement is a free-flow to Qi-stance. Big deal. You can do that from a parry, too.
It truly doesn't really make any sense. Before CCU, it did as much as a heavy, which was fine. I would like to see the deflect damage bumped up to 24, because 20 makes it unworth it.
Yeah I remember hearing that too, and i agree that really any deflect should be worth the risk. Especially because against heroes with hyper armor chains Shaolin is vulnerable to follow ups when flowing into Qi stance. Which means the only safe way to deflect a light attack is to only perform the deflect and nothing else unless you wanna risk getting hit with a heavy in the next moment. And all this at for 20 damage alone? That's just an unfair trade.Originally Posted by MCBooma16 Go to original post
I've also heard the free flow into Qi stance, which is why I brought up highlander initially. His light parry into offensive stance allows him to land a successful Offensive stance heavy which deals 30 damage, a proper reward I think but one that out classes Shaolin's deflect heavy into Qi stance, which I feel are very similar maneuvers.
Before when the deflect heavy was the same as a neutral heavy it was at least somewhat worth it for the quick transition to Qi, much faster than a parry. But now the most I can get from a deflect is shock value if anything. On a good day I might be able to land some beautiful executions from it but up against more experienced players it gets dicey real fast and I think at that point it has to be questioned why deflect is worth it at all.
I personally would love to see a 28 damage deflect heavy. I feel like in this case it would be a great way to reward a risky move, while also alerting the enemy that blindly throwing lights or basic combos can be fatal, indicating they should switch up their strategy as soon as possible.
