    Yes, very different from GR...
Do not hold on to your inferior level weapons, you will be overwhelmed by enemies with higher levels. Actually, makes no sense to hold on on anything until you get to level 40. It is normal at low level to get the gear mostly from random loot, not from drops.
Scopes have no utility beyond the attributes they give to your weapon. The exception is MMR, but do not expect them to work as well as in in Breakpoint.
Your objective for now is to get to level 40, and hopefully enjoy journey. Take your time and explore... While is nice to get the good gear past level 40, the only thing that changes after that is the difficulty.

    What would you recommend?

I like the MK17 because I can take down most regular enemies in two or three shots. It’s a bit more realistic to me than having to mag dump an enemy in full auto. Even with the gun 2 levels behind my player level, it’s doing a fine job. But you’re right. I may have to switch to something higher level if a MK17 doesn’t drop very often.

I realize I might be trying to play this game in a way it’s not intended, but if I’m forced to play a style I don’t like, then I’ll probably just go back to GR (although the reason I’m here is I’ve gotten bored with it).

I absolutely agree with this excellent advice. Chris, I would not get too attached to any weapons or gear so early in the game because you are going to be constantly swapping stuff out as you level up. In fact, your loadout might have to be a hodgepodge of things at times depending on what you find. The good news is that once you hit level 40, you can really hone in on a particular build.

Use the levelling up to experiment and try the guns as there's no point getting attached to something that's not hitting hard enough before long. I tried going by class and finding ones that suited the way I wanted to play. Gives you chance to find one you like that'll do the job you ant when you get to end game and farm for it then

As I said before, experiment with different weapons. Start by trying Marksman Rifles - i.e. Classic M44, M700 Carbon, Tactical .308 etc. They are slower firing, but do more per-bullet damage.

[edit] Fixed - the Classic M1A is a rifle, not a MMR. The Classic M44 is a MMR.

I came from Breakpoint as well, and for the same reason
TD2 is a different style, faster pace, closer combat (need to use cover), lot's inside, goofier, almost cartoonish at times... Took me until level 10 or so to get used it to and especially to get used to the gun-play (after Breakpoint sniper rifles), but man, I had a lot of fun after that!
AR and rifle are probably your best bets (to make the transition), although lately I prefer LMG (Pestilence is my latest choice). MMR are almost useless and I personally hate the scatter shots of shotguns.
These are all subjective opinions tho...
All I say is you should give it a chance, you might warm up to it.

I'm already enjoying it... no doubt about that. The combat can be intense and it's a nice change of scenery. I was amazed last night as I think I got hit by a IED in a remote control mop bucket!

I will try different weapons, but I already have a good idea what playstyle I'm going to use and how I'm going to roll. I think the glass cannon (high DPS, less tank) style is for me. Precision shooting and head shots (I've already mastered that from breakpoint) and hard hitting single shot weapons will be my preference.

As everyone suggests, I will try some different weapons though.

Btw, you will find quite bit of stuff if you explore the sewers / underground... and always keep an eye out for doors and gates with the yellow locks that you can shoot off, or yellow electrical boxes with blinking red lights. Useful at lower level, not as good past level 40.
Scenery wise, goofier or not, this game can be breathtaking at times... very good looking.

dont go the glass cannon route , that is what the try hards will tell you to do but its not fun , especialy for someone new , you already die too fast in this game , you dont want to die twice e as fast or do you?

and forget breakpoint , this is a diferent game and because of that it plays diferently , the MK17 is also good rifle in here but you will want to try all the other stuff to find your new "favourite" .

like many said already take your time to do just that while leveling up , dont worry about anything until you reach 40 and endgame , until there you really only need to pick up and /or equip whatever seems better than what you already have , there is not even the need to stash anything or have more that what is currenly equiped , just have fun.
