No good. Avoid the AMD 840 chip, it's a rebranded athlon x2.

You can get an x4 955BE based system on your budget, which is MUCH better, but near the same price.

Now actually seems like a good time to upgrade! prices are cheaper then ever. And will be a good gaming system(for everything other then COD ).

As someone already pointed out, toms is a great place to start. If your look at $500 complete, your looking at i3-2100 sandy bridge, or AMD 955.
The i3 flat out games better then the 955, but the 955 is cheaper, and substantially more versatile(4 cores vs 2, and overclockability) If the coders ever get around to actually making proper use of mulitcore(4+) chips, the 955, may be the better way to go.

Im upgrading in the next couple days. So heres my advice. AMD 955 - $109, am3+ capable motherboard, $90, 8gigs ddr3 1600, $70. All prices canadian, and my local shop.
Thats only $270 for the base of your system. If your gonna reuse parts from your current rig(case, psu,hd). You can flat out dump the rest into a good video card, and be set.

A couple things to note! If you are going amd, make sure you get a am3+ ready motherboard, for when AMD's new line of chips come out, in the next month or 2. These are "supposed" to be the response to sandybridge, and should be very competent chips, this way in a year or so, you can simply drop a new chip in at minimal cost, and without overhauling your entire system.

Second point, everyone is going on, and on about, how you need to upgrade to run COD, and thus throwing their own money at the problem. It DOES NOT matter how much you upgrade you're car, or what you've got under the hood, we are still driving on a dirt road here. And until thats fixed, until that road is paved. The amount of money you need to throw into a new computer per performance point you get back out, is going to be a negative result(strictly COD speaking), and really not worth the investment. So upgrade with caution. COD has been an absolute boon for computer upgrades, but it wont "actually" solve the performance problem.

+1 to what Davinci said. Which also probably means putting it together yourself. If you are on a budget, you need to do it yourself, anything else is just a waste.
