    Japanese lettering on Murakami backpack

There's Japanese script on my favourite backpack in the game, and I'm curious to find out what the translation is!

I made out the characters to be 薙刀.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naginata

What it means or references in the Division lore I am not so sure.

    Hey there

The kanji 薙刀 (read "naginata") describe a long spear with a slightly curved blade used in the past.
If you're curious, you can check out this wikipedia article.
It's worth noting that the name of every gear piece of this set also describes the piece in Japanese ("suneate" means knee pad(s), "haidate" is "thigh guard", yugqke is a type of archer glove, etc...)

I would love to know why the developers chose to include this on the backpack, though! Does one of them practice naginata-jutsu?

Thanks for replying and thanks a lot for the translation! The fact that it means naginata is super cool!

And I'm aware that the Murakami Industries gear pieces are named after pieces of Japanese armor. The specific backpack in the screenshot is called "Horo". I googled it and found out that a Horo was a cloak or garment attached to the back of armour worn by samurai.

It may also be of interest in tracking down the lore:

The named kneepads "Emperor's Guard" are a Murakami brand piece. Perhaps there's a historical reference to a Japanese emperor who had a guard that specialized in the Naginata?

Or maybe it's just a Warhammer 40k reference. The personal guard of The Emperor of Mankind..the Adeptus Custodies...use a long glaive-like weapon called the Guardian Spear.

i think the emperors guard kneepads refer to camouflaged warriors such as ninjas that were dispatched by the emperor in pre industrial japan to spy and slay on others, which would make sense because the original emperors had the talent "perfectly cloaked" on them before they were changed to 1% armor regen with gear 2.0. im not an historical expert though, so its just an assumption.
