I think I fixed my DX12 crashing problem

At least, I haven't been crashing for the last 5 hours or so..
My problem was related to overclocking my 1st Gen Ryzen 1200 to 3700. I saw that when DX12 is enabled only then does The Division 2 make use of the extra cores on the CPU. I figured maybe it was getting too hot, so I went in the BIOS and dropped it down to 3450 I think.

Anyways, I'm using that Ryzen with a GTX 1050ti & 16gb RAM. I'm using DX12 on medium settings and getting a pretty stable 45 FPS, which is good enough for me Thought I'd share this because I'm happy to not be crashing. Maybe if you are crashing it is related to overclocking as well.

Overclocking is over rated most of the time. I actually had my CPU under clocked for a long time until I finally stepped into the 21st century and added liquid cooling to my rig. lol

But yeah, DX12 is unstable as hell and heat will crash it every time.

My PC is old school as hell too. FX8320 8 core CPU with the OG GTX980 GPU. lol

The old girl is still too pretty to get rid of

Yeah I don't notice a difference other than that The Division 2 is now stable. No crashes going on about 8 or 9 hours.

After my last post I had a crash then another one. My hope is that its an infrequent thing but it looks like I spoke a bit too soon. Dang

    I'd just go with DX11. It's fine.

My rig is 100% stable using DX12 with maybe a single crash in the last 6 months. But it never used to be this way, Div2/DX12 would crash 2 maybe 3 times an hour. But I had other problems as well, but only with Div2 and Vermintide. Both use Easy Anti-Cheat and updating my AMD graphics with a beta driver caused all sort of EAC violations. These problems persisted even after installing verified drivers. I had to manually copy files from a "working" PC to my PC to get the games to run but they still crashed.

After biting the bullet and doing a full Win10 pro format and rebuild using only verified drivers both games are stable. Div2 has crashed maybe once in 6 months, Vermintide never, both using DX12.

It may be a daunting prospect but sometimes a complete wipe and restart is the only way. Oh, and does DX12 make a difference? A little. Maybe 5fps is you go by the frame counter, visuals also enhanced a little if you like to stand still and look around at the running water and volumetric "air" effects.

Edit: Mckrackin that is a magnificent looking beast you have there.

Not bad for her age. I keep thinking about an upgrade but it just keeps playing the new titles at 60 FPS at 1080p. Just can't justify the money for a new one. lol

Was able to run without crashes in DX12 on my new GPU after I increased the page file size to a crazy size. No idea why, but starting the game up in DX12 instantly ramps up the pagefile size to 10+ GB.

But can only be sure if this runs fine for weeks on end because the crashes are inconsistent.

    PC is fairly up-to-date though:

    • 9900KS @5.2Ghz (no AVX offset)
    • Geforce RTX 3090 FE (gave up on trying to find a 3080 in stock)
    • DDR4 @ 3.2Ghz

This is the most expensive GPU I ever bought, actually still kind of feel guilty spending that much on it :x

Framerate difference between DX11-DX12 is even worse with the 3090 then when I was using a 1080. 30-40 fps difference in some areas.

Though if this stays stable, then it makes me believe the game or drivers are doing something funky on non reference cards from older gens.

I personally have not had to completely rebuild a windows system in at least a decade.

If I suspect instability is coming from the OS layer, I recommend to use DDU in safe mode to remove GPU drivers, then reboot, and reinstall the latest production drivers.

I've seen that solve many, many problems over the years.
