Ubisoft Quebec struck gold.
Impressions after 20 hours of playtime on PS4, barely scratching the surface:
Despite having great experiences in the past, I haven't touched a Ubisoft game in recent years.
Then came along Immortals Fenyx Rising... A new IP that seemed like the perfect birthday gift for a dear friend of mine.
As a Ubisoft veteran, he was expecting to receive Watch Dogs Legions or Assassin's Creed Valhalla. But no, I wanted to surprise him. This game was talked way less about, releasing next to giants as the ones just mentioned.
I ended up surprising my friend and myself. Because I bought it twice.
Immortals Fenyx Rising choses simple fundamentals.
It has simple visuals for example, yet the Golden Isle looks jawdropping thanks to a varied color palette and dense panoramas. The mechanics are also simple and quick to learn. Yet its combat and puzzles challenge you enough to keep it from feeling stale, making exploration constantly rewarding and fun. Add to that the storytelling of Greek mythology with a healthy dose of humor and you truly have something special.
At first the cartoony design drove me away, but I'm so happy I gave this a try. This isn't only for kids.
Most games want to be realistic because the visuals allow it. But reality can be quite boring.
I honestly can't remember the last time I had this much fun. It takes me back to the joy of playing action adventures like Rayman Revolution on PS2. This game is the perfect escapism.
I truly hope this sells well and opens the door for more. Because I want more. (Even purchased the Season Pass to emphasize that)
Thank you, Ubisoft.
Suggestion:
Sometimes I'm too busy with combat or puzzles to listen to Zeus and Prometheus.
To counter that, it would be great to have a 'lore 'tab in the menu to learn more about discovered environments and enemies.
You could even just paste the dialog between Zeus and Prometheus there.
A small and entertaining encyclopedia of Greek mythology.
