Hmm base on the video those swords were 1-handed Viking swords and created between 900–1100 A.D.

Also base on this source 800–1000 A.D. Vikings created such swords - they were very rare but they existed

At least it's confirmed. My disappointment is immeasurable.

In the comment section in this video there's a lot of damage control from AC fans going on about how rare swords were for the time period, and how only the rich Norsemen of status could afford them so it shouldn't matter because it's not Historically accurate. I just want to say, on that note, of the 100+ weapons found in Viking age pagan burials in Iceland, only 16 are swords, so yes they were "rare" but not THAT rare. The iconic viking sword did exist in great enough numbers that they should be included.

Plus we've already seen other vikings using them in trailers. The assets exist, and Eivor is the leader of a settlement. It would make sense for him to use a 1h sword. Ubi screwed up in my opinion.

You can tell those man that this game include flails yet there is literally no historical evidence that flail was used as weapon at all (dont confuse wooden flail farmers used for work ). Only source we have about it existence are some medieval pictures.

They are talking about a certain brand of sword called the Ulfberht that was starting to be made in the Rhineland, not viking swords as a general thing. Production of Carolingian swords started in the 8th century and by the 850's the Franks were punishing local smiths who were selling swords to their neighbours, the Norse and the Slavs in a kind of black market arms dealings.

It's a shame we can't use one handed swords because I spotted that Basim has a pretty unique curved sword on his hip that would have made for some cool reward.

To be honest, it look a bit like Basim and Sigurd try to grab the clearly one-handed / regular-sized swords with both hands. That would give me the hope that we just misunderstood the comment of the developer and as mentioned from a few users before, that it is no prove for not being able to use any regular swords. Maybe there are regular swords and we have to use them just with both hands until we have the dual wielding skill unlocked. I mean just because we were not able to use it in the demo it does not mean that they are not available/usable. But i fear that my thinking is just a way to comfy myself

Strange thing is that opponents use 1-handed swords

Question is why you can not get a 1-hand sword from the killed enemy
The animations are there as the enemies use 1-handed swords

Although confirmed that there won´t be any one handed swords in the world, i would no rule out the possibility of pbtaining one in the later stages of the game. Since visiting Northern America will be a thing there is a good chance that the player might come along one, since there is a collectible in one of the northern american AC games tied to both vikings and swords.

Another thing i would not rule out, especially after reading the comic is that there might be a storyplot revolving around this topic and the reason why no one handed swords are out in the world as loot might be connected to it.

As shown above - this weapon exists everywhere in the world of ACV.
    Its not rare.
The fact Eivor cant just puck a sword from a dead enemy is beyond dumb.
If all weapons the enemies use were useable by the player than it wouldnt be a big deal, but once this isnt the case - it breaks something fundemental in the suspension of disbelief and the acceptance of the player to not have something every low level grunt has.

"I just can't fathom who thought that making a shield a weapon is more important than making a 1h sword a weapon. "

I can after the way everyone griped about no shield in Odyssey ........ They simply doubled down on the shield thinking it was what people wanted ,,,,, They also added a flail weapon..... There are onl;y so many resources available for physics on a PS4 and Xbox One and they reached that limit with Origins ..... It's not like adding extra higher resolution textures or special effects based on the GPU, they are hampered with a pathetically weak CPU that has less power than the average smart phone these days not to mention has a slow clock speed ..... The AMD Jaguar CPU cores were weak in 2014 and now they are almost a joke

The predominance of the axe comes mainly from that fact that before being a weapon, it's also mainly a tool.

Now that being said, as said by many others before me in this thread, it would be silly not to have swords in the game, especially as we have flails and hammers, two weapons vikings almost never used during the whole viking period...
(yes I know, Þór's hammer blabla, but no, except the god, no battle hammers for vikings. I'm pretty sure that not a single warhammer were found by archeology in northern europe. They are almost as legendary as the horns on the helmets )

And a game about vikings without Ulfberht swords, cant be a good viking game!

Yeah, agreed. Considering our character is a rich warrior, and aren't we a warlord anyway? We should have 1h swords.
