I disagree. People are already catching onto this and complaining on YouTube and reddit. At some point Ubisoft will need to offer some sort of counter argument or just give in. This is already one of the most popular threads.Originally Posted by CyCzarn Go to original post
On Reddit some posters keep saying there is the Iconic looking Frankish/viking type of sword, that is one handed but it's called a "Viking dagger". I cannot find any footage of this weapon they are talking about, but I'll keep looking. Although I think they must be mistaken because it seems pretty definitive with the answer Benoit gave us.
What are you guys talking about i looked at the video and at 3:59 female Eivor can wield a one handed "sword" it's called "Hundtoth a fine dagger" but that looks like a one handed sword to me.Originally Posted by topeira1980 Go to original postMaybe back in those days Vikings did call a one handed sword a dagger because those weapons looked small to them ( more like a "dagger" ) i don't know. I'm afraid my knowledge of weapons and history is not that good but that's clearly a one handed sword at least to me she even wields the "sword" later in the video.

Well Eivor in the video is using a Langseax which was an Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian knife that was long but used more like a machete. It had a single edge and looked like this
The type of sword that's Iconic for the viking age should look more like this. Like it's simple, elegant and most importantly used with one hand. It's pretty fascinating it's an evolution of the Roman spatha that came out of the migration era.
The Frankish/Carolingian sword it's called, and I can't name a single piece of media about the viking age that doesn't have them in it. Basically it's one of the first things that pops up in the mental image of "Vikings" for a lot of people, so to see it replaced with gigantic two handed fantasy swords is just kinda bizarre. I know AC is never going to be historically accurate, but it would be nice to at least have the weapons be more grounded in reality and authentic. You see NPC's and even Sigurd holding a proper sword in the over view trailer like right here
If I'm wrong on any of this someone please correct me.
don't judge the weapon by the icon and it's model in the menu. those are completely misleading. the models in AC:O, AC:OD and AC:V change size according to if they are in hand or sheathed or in the menus.Originally Posted by Patricia81994 Go to original post
Also, if the weapon is considered a dagger by the game, it will animate as a dagger and NOT like as sword, which means Eivor will thrust with it and stab, but not swing or slash. if it doesnt animate like a sword than it won't feel like a sword when you play with it.
the lack of shield in ACOD was more about the control scheme, how you'd use the abilities and bow and shield, and those didnt fully gell, if to judge by how the game turned out to be.Originally Posted by longjohn119 Go to original post
But, not including the shield in ACOD and the swords in ACV has mostly to do with the amount of work it takes to include them.
A shield in ACOD would mean that all animations of ALL weapons would need an alternative to be used with or without a shield. that's a lot of work.
And a sword in ACV would mean it will need animations for each and, for certain skills etc etc. there's some work to be done.
But i still think that some animations exist in the use of daggers and axes and even the greatswords that could work for a 1h sword and it's not that much work to be considered too much.
I just can't fathom who thought that making a shield a weapon is more important than making a 1h sword a weapon. it's the same amount of work, but one of these two ideas is warrented and practically obvious, and the other is some sort of a joke. Did someone at UBI thought that if they didn't include shields as weapons there will be a 13 pages thread about how stupid they were to not do this?!
that's true. But regardless of what history really showed, in the game itself nearly 90% of all Saxons are using 1H swords. if it's so common in the game world, it should be common for the vikings as well.Originally Posted by longjohn119 Go to original post
In my opionion it would totally be fine when they just add smaler versions of the two-handed swords that would use the same animations as the regular two-handed swords. Just editon in speed and damage and the other stats and thats it. With the dual-wielding skill it would be like a regular one handed sword. I think the efforts for this should be not that much. But regardless of this, it would not be cool at all when we would not have regular swords.
As i said in my previous post my knowledge of weapons is not that good it just looked like a one handed sword to me the only thing that was different was the name.Originally Posted by topeira1980 Go to original post![]()
I was clearly wrong ... oops ... so i will shut up now.
The only thing that i have to say about the video is that that moving back and forth real quick looks absolutely ridiculous that Jor guy uses it quite often though.

I dont know how much of a difference that is, but i am really hoping that certain swords will have normal proportions and be faster and weaker. more like Shadow of War or The Witcher 3(as i've said in previous post). it doesnt need to be as fast as TW3, but faster than the 1h axes that ACV has. swords are meant to be balanced and lite and fast and I want a few swords in the game that feel like it. Especially if i am using a shield along with them.
