For two years I’ve held off on purchasing this game due to the horrible reviews. This has been the most controversial game in regards to games I’ve looked at purchasing. I listened to everyone one complaining about the weapon variety, story, lack of good characters, boring open world, etc. etc.
The only Far Cry game I’ve played was on Wii. I bought the bundle with FC3, FC5, and New Dawn. I started with FC5 two days ago; I’ve completed Faith and John’s region and wow, I’m really upset I didn’t get this game earlier. I’m burning through all this content and I don’t want it to end! I can’t wait to play through New Dawn.
I’ve always been one to look through a lot of Reddit posts, YouTube videos, etc. to figure out if a game is “worth it” to me but I’ve come to find that people will complain about anything for any reason. I listened to these uninformed opinions and kept myself from great content. No longer will I look into games the same way I do now, that’s for sure.
I cannot wait for Far Cry 6!
I used to think that gamers and reviewers were being too critical in 2000s, then now we ended up with people who are overly critical in the 2010s to the point they are not even trying anymore.
I would often hear bias for disliking a game in the 2000s and not once had I thought it would only get worse. There are review bombings from gamers and then there are journalists who are not even trying to review a game properly. If you played a game long enough, you can tell when a journalist made a review that is based on their next paycheck and not someone who is actually aiming to see through every nook and cranny in terms of explanation and understanding of how the game works.
There are a lot of so called gamers who review games they never even played, and even if they did, it's likely they spent less than 1 to 2 hours on it. And then you have people who hate the game they play but there are times they play it a lot anyways which made their own opinion full of contradictions and hypocrisy. Do they deliberately punish themselves by a playing a game they do not like? Or do they actually enjoy the game deep down despite being a cynic? It's understandable if they don't like certain aspects of a game, such as story, but there are times they allow it to overshadow everything else the game has to offer such as gameplay and graphics. There's way too much scolding these days and I believe this attitude will only get worse in the 2020s.
Personally, I love the game play of FC5. Between the guns(effectiveness, accuracy, variety, and Feel) decent vehicles, companions, and general movement in game, it is the best and most polished FC game I have played. If this game had FC3 story and FC5 game play, I would call it close to best game ever.
What I hate is the story and the total and complete railroad of it even though they kinda fake you into thinking there are choices. Play the game all the way through and if you want to debate story, I will, but to me it stinks. Luckily you can escape through 90% of the cutscenes and barely have to deal with it.....but gaghh, if I have to listen to another instance of the "Cook" story mission, I may go insane.....it is sad you take off your headphones to play a certain part of the game.
And yeah, reviews and such are going to get worse, as I think Devs listen too much to twitter and not to their players, as well as it is cool to "post the right kind of review" for a game rather than what you actually feel about it.
I was the same. Although I didn't hold off on buying it because of bad reviews but because I generally don't buy games on day 1 unless it's Watch Dogs or Assassin's Creed or a Naughty Dog game.
I couldn't believe how great the game was. Beat it twice. And the multiplayer is some of the best I've played too - and I hate multiplayer!
I've been playing through this again, waiting for AC:Valhalla. I really hated the cutscenes, and pipelining you into the story. This time around I just ignore it, ESC what I can and carry on. What is really noticeable this time though, is the fact that I seem to have a million missions still to do, but I'm accumulating resistance points too quickly!
I'm now avoiding conflict, but just freeing up allies/sidekicks accumulates a lot of them. I wish the game was more open.
On the positive side, the gun play, firefights, your guns/fangs for hire. The humour is really well written. The missions are brilliant. It's 95% a great game, a couple of shortcomings spoil it a bit, but I'm delighted I gave it another chance. Might even dive back in and take another approach over the weekend.
