I only have the trial version, does that make a difference?
Seem like i missing part of the options available, see.

Bill, I did that when I was running the trial/demo ver 1.131. When the first box comes up, before you even choose to play -- pick Options (EDIT: Whoa! Hold the Bus! Not Options! Configure! Before the game loads, pick Configure. Dunno how I screwed that pooch!) then in the next box choose Video. About 1/4 or so down, right of center you should see the DirectX pick-thingus (yeah, that's a cable guy type tech-nical term I used right there! ).

Be sure to look the options through though as there's a lot you can tailor/customize to suit yer hardware and yerself. You also have, if you enable them, about half the cheats available so even in the demo you can see what it's like to use weapons with more proficiency than you can in only 7 levels of upgrades for example and it -does- make a difference. But you can't use a mod or give yourself money or extra experience (which would only get you to level 7 quicker anyway) or any of that. Not sure since I never tried but you might be able to avoid like 30 bandits catching up to your 5 or less party by putting the mouse pointer where you want to get and ctrl-left-click to teleport, at least until you have enough recruits to survive in some places where the bandits are all mounted and well trained. But that's for learning campaign the fast way. In campaign, in the town you start (all the towns have this) is the Arena where you can gain experience, build up your character, level up to 2 and maybe make some denars to buy something useful or recruit a bigger party with. Once you can take the bandits you will have plenty.

For me, guessing the lead and getting it right just does something I like. The faster I'm going the more the arrow carries in the direction I'm going while at the same time the target might be running in any direction. Plus your aiming 'reticle' is not as good when you're moving -- it's 3 little arrows pointing inward to center of aim and the closer they are to center the smaller your shot will deviate. Horse at a gallop or better, the deviation may be 2x as wide as a man at much range depending on your RPG horse archery skill, the strength of the bow and your 'power draw' skill combined. Plus if you hold aim too long then your arms get progressively fatigued and the reticle widens -- that's when you rt-click (block) to not fire and save your arrow, of which your supply is limited.

Standing still, I've made head shots on f___ers advancing on me medium to close. Over the top of the shield, right in the unprotected face close up they usually go down but you might hit a cheek and have to shoot again. With a light bow you might even be able to get that second shot in, when someone gets hit they kind of do a short pause and lose any aim or swing the were into but then so do you when you get hit. If he's close and pauses and there's not another coming right up, draw the hand weapon and cut him down!

Does that strike you as fun? Well it is! Reach out and touch someone , it gives them something to stop and think about.

I edited the last post about that over 2 hours before your reply:

pick Options (EDIT: Whoa! Hold the Bus! Not Options! Configure! Before the game loads, pick Configure.

Sorry for the f-up, please not the whip! Ooooh, yes, the club! Sleepy times here I comes!

Anywho, this is before the game loads on that first dialog where you only get the choice of Native? (meaning the vanilla game, each mod has it's own name).

I've gone far enough along to where my arrows only hurt some enemies a little bit. So I switched to javelins for the bow and a Military Scythe and wow it's pretty final from a moving horse. You can do as the manual says (a download pdf) and the pole arm will drop and couch when you're going fast enough but I find that click and hold for thrust and the thing can point and punch even when stopped. It's got standoff power. I've wiped out 3 foot attackers before they did any damage to me while trying to get my nag out of a 'traffic jam' with another horse and moving again, one right after the other. Nasty sound effect too.

When you're being chased by a guy with 4 foot of lance past the end of his horse's nose and his horse is faster than yours (with riding skill and encumbrance as factors) then the terms turn rate and turn radius take on new meaning. If it's a left turn and you have something to throw or shoot, you may be in luck. Otherwise turn right, slow down, get inside that point and if you have a long enough pole, you take his horse out before he can get to you, or you can get your horse to rear up and stop and maybe get a shot as he sails on by to your left, all the time hoping someone else don't catch you stopped.

That Scythe is just wicked though. I gotta level up a lot of times before it gets worth carrying a bow again, if ever! That's because there's 4 slots and I'm not dumping the shield!

Hah! Knew you'd get round to it eventually. There's a few ways to work with the lance depending upon the setting you choose in the options. Either you can have it so it comes down automatically, or you can have it so that you press X to couch the lance. Fighting on foot is the real challenge on M&B, though. In the same way that getting out of a huge furball alive on Il-2 is satisfying, getting away after being dehorsed next to a huge host of enemies is damn satisfying, especially with manual blocking enabled.
Well, that and horse archery, as you've noticed. Until you get to high proficiencies and your crosshair is basically pixel-perfect, although I hear that it's not as easy in Warband as it used to be even at higher levels, haven't played a horse-archer for a while.
