    2 questions

    Hello!

    Just Dance 2020 - Playstation 4

    1) One of my kiddos managed to crack the cd in the middle and while it doesn't look like the crack goes into where the data is, the console doesn't recognize the disc. Does Ubisoft offer any kind of replacement CD, instead of me having to pay $40-50 for the game?

    2) I am baffled on why the Playstation camera works when it wants to, as in it will recognize my son on the player selection, but then doesn't register him at all once in the dance... and sometimes vice versa. Nothing in terms of ambience of the room has changed... well maybe my son making some sweat from previous dances... lol is this a well known issue of intermittent capture of the player?

CapMReynolds: Hi there, CapMReynolds! Thank you for sharing these questions here! I do apologize that you've had this issue, however we do not have a replacement system available for game disc. Therefore, you'll need to repurchase the game either digitally through the PlayStation Store or another approved retailer. Also, for the issues with the camera, is your son using both the game controller and the camera?

Thank you for the reply! I guess getting the game digitally would be a better choice so I don't have to worry to buy the game again if i have to change the drive / reinstall.

As to the other question, no, we are only using the camera. I wasn't aware that you would need to hold the controller while using the camera.

We were using our phones but more often than not, the phones are flying out of the hand...

There are two ways to play (without using your phone). You can dance using the camera only; this is hands-free camera dancing. Or you can dance using the PS Move controllers (which requires using a camera); this tracks the motion of your right hand.

I like the concept of hands-free dancing with the camera, but with the PS4 this can be frustrating. It's a relatively common problem with the game suddenly no longer registering the player. It's possible that sweat contributes to this (interfering with facial recognition). However, if you look at the quality of the body-outline image that appears at the top of the screen (and on the player selection screen before the dance begins), the quality of this image tends to degrade over time (it can drastically deform, pick up large blobs, have little pieces missing, etc.). Perhaps this degradation is part of the issue. It seems to keep tracking your motions even after the dance ends. If you wipe your face with a towel, drink water, or walk out of the room, these things tend to contribute to more degradation of the body-outline image (yet they really can't be avoided; it would be much worse to overheat and pass out). Closing the game out and restarting after a few dances seems to help (but it's really not a viable option for the world dance floor).

I don't understand why the PS4 camera Just Dance experience has been like this for years. Even when it works, the tracking doesn't seem to compare with Xbox Kinect. When I dance with Xbox Kinect, the body-outline image is sharp, crisp, detailed, and doesn't degrade over time,. I have seen Kinect players' videos on YouTube that appear to have body-outline problems, but even when it has problems, it appears to track and score moves better than the PS4 camera, in general. If Xbox Kinect can be made to work well, why can't the PS4 camera? One would think that Sony could make a camera system that works quite well. Ubisoft made Kinect work very well, so if the PS4 camera doesn't, it seems like the problem must lie with Sony...

The other option with the PS4 (besides the phone) is the PS Move controllers. Of all the controllers for Just Dance (phone, Switch Joy-Con, Wii remote, PS Move), my favorite one to grip and hold is the PS Move. I've hardly used it though since I prefer hands-free dancing. Yet when I look online, I see many players doing well with PS Move. A funny thing is that a dance that's really easy with the camera can be really hard with a controller or phone, and a dance that's really easy with a controller or phone can be really hard with the camera. (And even camera scoring can be considerably different between PS4 and Xbox Kinect.) Due to this, one could hit the highest scores across the board by using the camera by itself for some dances and using PS Move (or a phone) for others (though on the WDF one must choose just one option). I wish they had separate Dancer of the Week scores for each mode of game play. If you prefer the camera and dance to a song that's really hard on the camera, it's rather ridiculous to compare your score to a Dancer of the Week who used a controller or phone, and similarly if you dance to a song that's really hard with a controller or phone and compare to a Dancer of the Week who used just the camera. (We have a similar issue on Xbox with Kinect and phone scores not having separate leaderboards. It's really like comparing apples to oranges. These issues plague the WDF scoring too.)

Check out Warfutt's amazing post regarding the PS4 camera. You can find it in the General forum of one of the older versions, maybe the Just Dance 2017 forum.

    Happy dancing and good luck.

Wow, thanks for replying here in such depth, greekphysics, and for offering helpful information and suggestions! It's awesome to see members of our community helping each other out, and sharing their experiences. Thanks for sharing your feedback regarding the different means of dancing and how you'd like their scores to be tracked separately; I'll forward this feedback to the team.

CapMReynolds, the excellent guide to the PS4 Camera by Warfutt that greekphysics mentioned can be found here. I hope it helps you! If you require any additional advice or assistance, please let us know.
