I like the series but there is something that takes me out of the game every time and that's when the game decides to put me in the backseat and force a cutscene in which something happens that I would have never been willing to go through on my own.
In Far Cry 3 there were these scenes when Vaas has you at his mercy and the redeeming feature is that the acting is absolutely superb and makes the whole scene work.
It never got to the point where it became insufferable and it didn't make me want to quite the game.
Far Cry 5 had the whole silly abduction scenes and they really went too far. I will never replay that game for the very reason that the whole thing was absolutely terrible. Not only could you get kidnapped on board a plane or a helicopter but it happened so often it was just silly.
Far Cry New Dawn was great except that every time the twins showed up the whole thing took a nose dive. Why would the main character willingly put himself at the mercy of these psychos is simply beyond belief.
As a player the truth is that willing suspension of disbelief can only go that far. When there is no player agency it just takes you away from the action.
I understand the idea is to create a narrative and have a scene that creates some tension and makes the whole series of events more memorable but taking away any meaningful choice does exactly the opposite.
It reminds the player that he is playing a videogame and not taking part in a great story.
The villains going on about their nefarious schemes and showing up their craziness (like the notoriously terrible twins) won't make for a better scene if the player no longer cares because he or she was forced to submit the character to the only path forward.
It's all a matter of balance and perspective but I do hope that Far Cry 6 won't abuse the whole kidnapping thing. The actor who plays the villain clearly has the chops to make the whole thing palatable but I wish the game won't go overboard with the whole thing. I think Far Cry 4 was ok with that but 5 went too far and New Dawn was just marred by the Twins acting like some Borderlands rejects.
Kidnappings occurred in scripted cutscenes in older Far Cry games. It wasn't an issue to players since it doesn't necessarily interfere gameplay and it only happens when you complete a section or reach the end of a level or mission.Originally Posted by WildCassowary Go to original post
As for New Dawn, it is pretty silly that your character is forced to do something absurd before you can progress. These kidnappings from Far Cry 5 don't occur in Far Cry New Dawn. By popular demand, it's likely it won't occur in Far Cry 6.
Kidnapping/captures in 3 were actually the best parts of the scenario, with the cenote or the burning hotel sequence. Each of those were a bit different from the others and I fear that the 3rd person perspective in cinematics in 6 will "kill" moments like the cenote scene if there are any.
In 4, the 2 abductions I remember, beginning and Durgesh, were pretty cool and didn't t seem forced to me. Same in Primal when caught by Udams. For 5 I understand somehow the problem but I think it was really part of the game and won t happen again. It s like the idea of Joseph to make you embrace its truth and force you to see the world how he sees it. SPOILERS: Jacob and Faith use these captures with very specific aim: turn their prisoners into weapons to kill the rebellion leaders, and it happens to work. The Jacob "only youuuuuuuu" method is even referred up to the very end of the game if you choose to let Joseph go. So for me, such captures were heavily linked to the game's story and won t repeat if not for same scenario purposes.
It's good that things won't get too far with Far Cry 6.Originally Posted by KrayZee_ Go to original post
Frankly kidnappings in Far Cry 5 turned out to be something of a deal breaker for me. I stuck to the game and soldiered through but I was no longer having fun.
The whole point of my post was that it doesn't make any sense to force the player to go down a certain path when it goes against logic and reason (Far Cry New Dawn is really fun but man that scene with the Twins is really contrived and doesn't make a lick of sense). If we're being forced down a path then at least we should expect the story to give us a backstory that would justify the whole thing.
It doesn't help that the villains in 5 and New Dawn lacked the charisma that Vaas and Pagan Min displayed.
That didn't bother me in Far Cry 4. I guess timing is relevant. They clearly overdid it with Far Cry 5 to the point that it became totally ridiculous.
