PS: workaround - use DX11 version.
Yeah, I have gone back to DX11.

Just to add. I start fine @4K and 90% resolution but over time first menu/map/inventory etc frame rate drops to a crawl then game (100% GPU usage but half GPU power usage).
    RTX2080ti, i9 9900KF, 32GBRAM@3200, 250GB NVMe.
I'll use DX11 until Vulkan is fixed (I hope - it runs better than DX11).

Just tried DX11 and it's a juddery mess (456.38 driver which by the sound of it is pretty bad). Getting 60fps but 30ms frametime. Unplayable. I'll see if having terrain quality at Very High or lower helps.

Messed about for a bit on my 8GB 2080, 32GB RAM, 8700K system. Monitoring using MSI Afterburner.

For me, this issue is clearly related to the Texture Quality setting, which makes sense if it's a VRAM issue. Tested on Low or Medium Texture Quality, VRAM usage does not approach 8GB- everything's fine. As soon as this setting is put on High or above, it only takes a few seconds (using the drone, browsing the UI) for VRAM usage to spike to 8GB plus, and for the frames to obviously drop catastrophically (in my case, from 70 to 20). Again, this makes sense if VRAM is being flooded. But what's changed in the last couple of TUs?

Vulkan performs LOADS better than DX on my system, so looking forward to this being fixed. Have tried all methods listed in this thread already. No go.

    Hello!

Sorry to hear you had frame rate issues with Vulkan.

Did you notice any difference before and after the TU 3.0.0 that occurred on 15th September?

    Thanks!

    Hello!

I noticed the problem sometime after TU 2.1 (the one that added AI teammates, I think that's the right number). I remember at that time dipping in and out of the game to mess about, and I know it occurred occasionally, but never enough to make me think it was an on-going issue. I certainly didn't bother troubleshooting it. From having a look over old threads in these forums, though, it definitely did seem to be a thing even then.

However, with TU 3, it's become unplayable- VRAM chokes within seconds with Texture Quality above medium. Note this is of course just for me- I think others have reported other graphic settings affecting their game, but I would think they're all linked to VRAM.

    Thanks for your help!

    VRAM usage

    Hi!

I noticed the same problem with both of my hardware except it is not limited to the Vulkan version because DX version does the same thing.
I bought the game yesterday, installed, optimized the settings via Nvidia and when I started the game, it crashed at the first cutscene.
Sometimes it crashed in the main menu, sometimes it crashed 1-4 sec after the game loaded, but the error messages was not consistent. sometimes uplay recognised the crash, sometimes I've got a "You run out of memory" error, but more often it just freezed and crashed my whole system.
So I tried every kind of troubleshooting, checked the game files via uplay, updated (with clean install) every single graphics driver, etc. but nothing worked.
So I tried setting the game to full low setting and it worked, but i knew my hardware can handle much more, so I started playing with the graphics setting and I found out if I set everything ON with ultimate settings the game runs with fix 60 fps (with low texture quality) but when I even try it with medium texture quality the game instantly crashes.

I have never had a problem like that in any other game, I even played the Beta version of the game, and I didn't experience anything like this.
I even tried playing on my laptop, but the same problem happened.

    PC Config:
    INTEL Core i5-4590 3.30GHz 1150 BOX
    MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G
    8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
    Windows 10 (up to date)

    Laptop:
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti 6GB GDDR6
    Intel® Core™ i5-9300H
    8GB DDR4 2666 MHz RAM
    Windows 10 (up to date)

Gents, its most likely the Battle-Eye Launcher. See my post just a few minutes ago. 09/22/20 Under CPU Drop. It may not be Vulkan as to the random act of this separate program running randomly. If anyone has any detailed info on BattleEye on how, when and where it acts. Please let me know, and please share my post so the Devs see it.

    Well now I don't know.

Randomly, and very occasionally, it'll be fine, even with Afterburner reading up to and over 8GB of VRAM being used. Once, I changed to windowed mode, and boom, back to 70fps. Back to fullscreen and back to 20 fps. Another time, I fired up UPLAY and launched the game straight after resetting my PC, and boom, 70fps. Then I alt-tab away and back, and I'm down to 20fps with VRAM still reading the same values.

I have no idea how to accurately identify any common underlying issues now.

Actually, I guess if it had been as simple a problem as VRAM filling up the the devs would have fixed it by now, really. This is why fixing bugs is never an easy process!

I did have a look at Battle-Eye, Wh1terider, but couldn't see it doing anything more than taking around 0.2% of the CPU, and all my clocks were fine. I wonder what's happening at your end!

Best of luck devs in solving this.

To me the issue is entirely based around Vulkan and Terrain Quality setting.
Ever since i put it on Very High the drops didn't occur. Using Ultra or Ultimate will cause the FPS to choke at random once i go from menus back to game or fast travel.

Same here. Seems like the ultra and ultimate settings for terrain quality are broken.
