You don't "have" to do anything or play things in a certain order. But, if you really want to be in the best position to enjoy the end game for a year plus, then I would recommend to do as little of the side missions as is possible and get your character to level 30 and then up the WT ladder (or level 40 if WONY). Because in the grand scheme of things, the only gear that matters is the gear at the top tier of the ladder. Side missions will scale to your level and the loot will scale as well. So deferring side mission until you are higher level will impact what you get.

That said, side missions really don't go away. Even after you complete them,m they come back in the form of bounties. You will play all those locations at least 5 times per month.

But during the story, side missions really exist to give you a way of obtaining xp and gear which makes tackling story missions a little easier.

So side mission is to make my main mission easier? Because I get level and gear to help me through the story?

Correct! Side missions will grant you XP and loot that will be scaled to your level, and can help you progress through the main missions. It's pretty fluid, so there is no set way to progress other than the main missions themselves. Tcarlisle2012's idea of putting off the side missions until the end can definitely help! But it is up to you and your playstyle in the end.

It's important to note that side missions also unlock crafting recipes or weapon mods. While not necessarily needed during leveling, it is something you'll want to do eventually.

Also of note is that there are a handful of hidden side missions that you have to discover through exploration. You could spoil them through google, but that's up to you.

Some side mission give blue prints for mods which will help you build a better end game character.

Don’t rush to the end. Enjoy the ride. Sounds like a good idea to get to the “end game”, but you will see that’s it’s smoke and mirrors and a shell game. Almost unanimously agreed upon that’s it’s the weaker aspect of the game.

you guys seem to forget that the side missions give you blueprints for weaponmods, and every side missions scales and gives you 1 3rd of a level

To the OP, you can play however you want to play it will be fine. You will get there eventually. However if you are looking to get to end game fastest, you want to do the following for the most part.

    1. Focus on main missions. Based on your level you will see which main mission is the next you need to do. They scale up usually 1 mission every other level if memory serves.

    2. In the situation where you need to do a next main mission but have not yet attained the recommended level e.g. you are 5 and next main mission is 6. Focus on the zone project e.g. federal triangle liberation. You would need to donate some supplies, complete activities (note taking a control point counts as 2 take control and defend). And finally find 5 shd caches. You will definitely make the level you need after all that plus the project complete xp.

    3. Very important, as soon as you unlock the police something side mission around level 12ish if memory serves go do it for the award of a light 5.56 extended mag. Makes a huge difference if you are using any 5.56 ammo guns. Think it pops on lower right side of map somewhere. Look for it

    4. At around level 20, keep focusing on main missions, but instead of projects to make up any interim levels start doing your side missions. Just do enough side missions to get your level xp for the next mission. Prioritize any side mission that rewards shd points (the little eagle will be on the side mission marker). Outside of the 5.56 mag you won't be getting the best mods from side missions. Even the 5.56 mod isn't the best, but it helps a lot at those lower levels till you get the heavy extended 5.56 mag.

    5. As you work through the game use your shd to unlock skills and perks. Don't use any shd on the mod perks until you have all the other skills and perks you need. Make sure you get bag and stash perks when you can. Grenades and armor kits are also quite useful.

Basically side missions scale in rewards while main missions do not. So they become more valuable as you become higher in level. They give you roughly 33% of the xp you need for your current level. So 3 will level you up at any level. Since the xp requirement at 20+ is much more than below 20, it is better to save them up for those levels.

Hope that helps you. As for WoNY, when you decide to head over there, I would do the same. Focus on main missions/investigation and after all missions are complete, use control points and other activities plus the side missions in ny to get to 40.

One more thing: the last story mode mission (The Capitol Hill) is locked behind level 30, because after that it automatically converts your world mode into Tiers. So even if you complete all the missions before level 30, you'll still need to level up to finish the story.
