Some of them have still to be released. More details here...

Your best bet is to try to find an original Frog boxing of the Whitley. Novo was selling it ten years ago; haven't seen it recently. I had a '60's Frog Whitley I got from a British friend in the '70s. It's fit was so-so, but the Novo version I had ten years ago was a nightmare. There was not enough putty in the world to make it look OK. Everything was badly warped, and the crisp definition was gone from the parts.Originally posted by Low_Flyer_MkIX:
I've just found out that the old kit specialst near me is more accessable than I thought - close to Parkstone station in Poole. Might have to have a quick train ride and get myself Frogged up with a Whitley. It's a nightmare keeping track of whose original kit ends up where, isn't it?
I think the 'best bet' for a new Stirling might be one of the Russian/Ukrainian outfits - a couple of firms do some unusual pre-war and early war stuff of varying quality. A Tamiya one would be nice though, wouldn't it? Maybe the praise being heaped upon the new (and very reasonably priced) Lanc' might spur Revell on, although they do seem to be fond of releasing old matchbox kits in shiny new packaging at the moment - talking of which, any thoughts on the Halifax compared to the old Airfix one? Never did get around to either.
The default Frog kit was no paragon. The snout had plenty of "issues".
As for Airfix Halifax vs Matchbox, the Airfix kit dates back to about 1961, and it is a MkIII. The late '70's Matcbox models all flavors of the the MkII, from the early turret nose to the late streamlined nose. The Modelcraft boxing supposedly has the early MkII with the Hudson-type dorsal turret. Aeroclub sells the "Z fairing" nose of 1943.
I went on a massive Airfix building spree in 1965. The Halifax was the one Airfix of the WWII British and Germans which defied me. I could not get the fuse sides to join. Haven't tried one since. I am sure the trouble was due to juvenile incompetence.
The Airfix kit is OK. Needs the Falcon canopy set because the Airfix glazing parts are absolute garbage and let down the kit badly. Never built a Matchbox, either. It is cursed by massive trenches which represent panel lines. The glazing is cursed by Victorian trestles instead of framing.
I took the coward's way out and bought the Corgi early MkII and Barton's "Excaliber" MkIII (he was the only Halifax crewman to get a VC).
There is a series of short-run early Whitley kits from the '80's about.
There is the Contrail series of vac-forms in 1:48 scale. They have the Halifax, Blenheim, and others. They are for the scratch builder only.
The really fun kit is the Matchbox 1:72 Heyford. Never built it but it is a good model. The Stranraer looks very good built.
Tamiya's 1:48 Lancaster dates back to '75. They belatedly put in the bulged bomb aimer's blister, treadless "tyres", and deH props in this year's incarnation. It is my Lanc weapon of choice. The Revell new release left out the dihedral on the outboard wing sections, a gigantic affront to the Lanc. The Hasegawa is too expensive for what you get, and the basically accurate 1980 Airfix Lanc is a sanding nightmare (did one as a Manchester and one "straight" ten years ago and sanded and sanded until I thought I was going to go mental). Really, ancient kits are for the birds.
There have been so many heavies in here lately, that I thought I need to build something else to protect them ...

This is 1/48 Spit IX originally made by Occidental. CMK made correcting resin parts for that plane and MPM released the box. This ought to be closest of what Spit IX shold be in this scale. Hase Spit has too long spinner and too short fuselage. ICM Spit has something wron with its wingroots. Both have better interior than this though.

The happy frenchman is taking the pistol of "Boche" and this übermann surely don't look happy.
@ KIMURA, surely this is too late, but a friend of mine (specialied in brit armour) told that usually British antennas were 6 feet long, but if you have it 2 m, it is quite close.
I've got a sketch of British armour rank pennants if I'm still in time Kimura. Little booklet from Bovington Tank Museum. Found it looking for something else.
Ah, I thought so Foxy - just making sure as it's such a good paint job for that size.
Nice one, Carts - she hasn't got a sister who thinks overweight smokers are cool and knows what a Westland Whirlwind looks like, by any chance?
I'm liking what I've seen of those figures, SheerLuck - good work. Looking forward to seeing the Spit come on.

Oh, interesting Stirling comparison graphic here...

Thanks LF.
Good work on that Stirling. Never realised it was bigger than Lancaster.
I have that old Tamiya 1/48 Lanc dambuster version. It is huge, but if I could get a 1/48 Stirling... oooh.
I have a Trumpeteer 1/48 Fw-200. It is huge too, but model itself wasn't that good. Tamiya Lanc seems to be much better.
Cheers, SheerLuck. I'm building up (see what I did there?)to some 1/48 stuff. Very taken with the idea of a couple of Russkie 1/32 Spits - RAF & VVS - that come with nice looking pilots & groundcrew I spotted browsing Hannant's site. Must be the next few years of my life mapped out now.
I figured if the canopy was an absolute disaster, the Stirling's really a non-starter - I could cover bad front & rear turrets with paper anti-frost tarpulins often spotted in pics, but that canopy is a distinctive part of the beast that can't really be hidden. Anyhoo...here's how it went...

I figured a black undercoat-come-template would start off the effect I was after...

Not perfect...but not disastrous. Good fit to fuselage on a dry run. I can carry on with a little more confidence now.
